what is the best material for a wind barrier around the patch... I have up a snow fence which is about useless and I see a lot of growers using this black material, what is it and where do you get it?

Silt fence. A hundred foot roll costs around $35 at Home Depot, garden supply stores, etc.
You will need to reinforce the fabric with metal or wooden posts due to the wide spacing of the stakes the fabric is attached to.

Silt Fence. Home Depot has it. 3ft x 100ft. Cheaply made. I end up buying new ones every year now.

wind, silt, snow fencing all work-each has its pros and cons, nothing better then round-up ready corn once it reaches waist high

I use plastic that you use for vapour barrior in houses. If it is put on tight enough it won't shake loose. I see no reason why house wrap wouldn't work as it is meant to block wind.

Silt fence is good but if you give the post one twist to wrap it once it helps keep pressure off it from ripping.

I would prefer snow fence over silt.Snow fence seems to have some forgiveness while silt fence seems to catch the wind and cause a swirl on the inside which is not good.Bin there done that and this is just my preference.

I'm with you. I put snow fence around perimeter but I.use silt as a close blockage till the plant isrooted better.

Synthetic roofing felt. We used deck defense by Owens Corning. 5' x very long. It's not cheap but it works very well with metal stakes and zip ties

I concur, silt fencing is the way to go. Does not look the prettiest but does the job.
