I have cut a back up plant off and thrown in the woods to get rid of it, and it started growing from where the side vines hit the ground, so anything is possible. I burn them now, because I don't want a PM factory from my culls.
However they can be moved. My first year I took a few cuttings off of a plant at a rooted node and replanted them - kind of like a clone -- and I also moved a 20 something day backup just to see if I could. They both wilted terribly the first couple of days and I lost the oldest leaves, if memory serves me, about half of them. But they took root and started growing normally again about a week and a half later, only to be given the axe because I was just using them to figure stuff out.
But think of this. Typically compost piles (unless they are finished compost) are very hot (both temps and Nitrogen) and depending on what it is made of (lots of manure) it can be high in salt. So I wouldn't normally plant anything in one.
If the plant looks "very dead" it probably is. But only time will tell.

Put a shade over it for a week or two. I have tansplanted a few vines that I had to remove to get to my pumpkins. The first time I tried it, I noticed it was wilting when the sun came out, so I put some of that cheap wire fence intended to border flower gardens around it then clipped an old bed sheet to it, forming a little tent. Took it off a couple of weeks later and managed to set a fruit on it.
