Matching Pumpkin tattoo's, buying a truck just to haul manure, living in an apartment but you drive 25 min. one way just to grow on someone elses land. Na we are not crazy/obsessed at all. :)

Or how about getting married at 10 am so you have time to get home and take care of your plants. And 4 years later still no honeymoon cause all extra money goes to the pumpkin..LOL...No vacations during the summer. God I could go on and on and on..lol Just might have to send in our story on this one.

Your right Shannon, I turned a large local TV station down for an interview/story once the production crew told me that their angle was to show how odd and wierd it was to grow giant pumpkins...no thanks!

But somebody will do it, there is always someone that wants the spotlight...good or bad...

Ours is an obsession, but it is a good obsession.

I agree with those who have posted as to the "tone" of the show. If it's to show people who have serious problems in their relationships with others... I don't think there is much of that here. I think for the vast majority of us, this obsession helps us to communicate better with others. I have good friends who are good people, from all over the country, because of this.

I haven't see that show much, but what I have seen is people eating soap, cigarettes butts, foam, dirt, and some of the craziest things ever. I would hate to see anyone on a show like this or any other that only shows such mentally ill people. I would categorize extreme growers as obsessive overachievers like marathon runners, rock climbers, fishing and hunters and others who brake free of the normal, not the crazy.
Please be careful they could twist it to look mentally ill for there or your own profit.
Even if I do feel mental from time to time.

I am obsessed with growing giant pumpkins, i'm obsessed with being outside and enjoy this world and teaching my kids those same things and to not sit in front of a tv or computer screen 24-7. As is the case with most all growers from what i've seen of these types of shows i'm pretty sure they would twist that however they see fit.

As far as communication goes, it's not just typing here on BP.com. When I run into somebody who I only see once in a while, their first question to me is "How are the pumpkins going this year?" (Even in January.) I could not quit this if I wanted to... I would have to tell people that I gave up the hobby, and that would totally bum them out, so I keep going. No, I'm not mentally ill...

When I say communication Cliff I don't mean those who knows us. Those who know us tend to understand & respect what we do because they know it is diffucult. But these shows aren't concerned with putting us in a good light. Train wrecks is what moves the dial so thats what they go for.

Wow, having not seen the show, I initially thought it would be cool to have a docementary on TLC. I guess that wouldnt be the case. May be I could get those LOVE DOLLS to come surround one of my pumpkins, or set them all up in the patch like they are weeding or something> LOL.

If you intend for your story to stick with just people with interesting obsessions then this is an interesting hobby with a few interesting offshoots like the pumpkin regatta. There is no shortage of obsessed people involved with this hobby. Competition is fierce but friendly. The best among us share their secrets freely. There is no shortage of kind, friendly, giving people here who enjoy helping others. With a few possible exceptions we are not crazy. Growing giants is an enjoyable way to spend time. Make no mistake about it though, it is the times with friends and family, the competition, the time spent chasing the "BIG ONE", that hold this hobby together. No different than any other competitive hobby. As odd as it may seem to some, growing giants is a wholesome hobby. Most of us with children have our kids involved in the hobby, and they love it. I really don't think it is necessary to make this out to be something perverse in order to have an interesting story. Please look long enough to find some of the many aspects of giant pumpkin growing and its associated activities that will make for a good "honest" story.
