Should tendrils be cut off. Might cutting them be an easy opening for disease and rot ??

If your going to bury( lay) that vine in a trench then cut them off. If you dont trench then leave them. They help to keep the vine from rolling in the wind. You can throw dirt on them to promote rooting and hold the vine down.

The thought here Dave, is that since most of us stake and bury vines, there is no need for the tendrils to hold onto stuff.
I will leave mine for a bit until the plant is established and I have a few parts buried...then the tendrils go

Either way, you can cut them off or throw soil on them as they could initially help anchor vines. It's the plant's natural way to help them anchor to the ground. They will grow around weeds but hopefully there aren't many weeds in your garden. You can puff some Captan or fungicide onto the area you cut off as well.

I've been leaving them to help support the vines in the wind even though I bury the vines. Also, if your looking to cut them off then they must be already established. This means they have already used some of the plants energy to grow. Might as well keep them for added support.

I cut them off as soon as I see them. Though they can be helpful if it's windy, I won't chance it so I erect temporary wind breaks around my plants. Just 2x2 steaks about 3 feet high and some extra weed barrier cloth I have.
