I agree, when I first started growing I lost my plants to them. They ate the roots and went right up the stem. In the morning the plants looked fine and by evening they were laying on the ground.

Yes, seed maggots reported in Amish gardens around here last week eating peas.

They got me last year. Lost 5 out of 6 in one day and one of those was an 1161. Not a fun way to start the season. Another step besides regular insecticides is to incorporate diatomaceous earth into your planting spot a couple days prior. I added a bonide product called Eight in shake pellet form which is labeled for seed maggots and has bienefrithin (spelling) in it and also a bonide product called systemic granular insecticide which is merit. All 3 of these where incorporated in a 3 foot radius around the plants. Then I took 10" pots and cut a slit on the side and removed the top 5 inches to make encircling collars around the transplants that are easily removed later. All of my sprouts treated this way the following day after getting whiped out last year had not maggot damage. So I did the same thing this year and I transplanted today. Have extra plants as backyps just in case....this saved my season last year.

Is this something I should watch for even if it wasnt a problem last year?Sounds like granular merit might be the way to go?
