When you say off season are you talking rotating or just the winter. If its the entire seaseon I would plant a cover crop. Peaceful Valley has many excellent ones, along with Johnny's Select seeds.

buckwheat is a good summer cover crop. legumes can help build nitrogen levels. Field peas and oats are a good combination. Kevin Marsh said at our growers meeting he sometimes sows oats and lets the oats go to seed, then when he incorporates it, it replants itself. 2 cover crops out of 1 sowing.

Should have been more specific, entire season off. I was looking for cover crop ideas and any others that folks have had success with. Looking to maximize soil rebuilding.
Thanks LVP and Ben...oh and Woods...you have now officially been "ignored"...LOL!

Duff,

Try some POV, as in peas, oats, and vetch. Highly
reccommend by NOFA-NH. It is 71% peas, 15% oats and 14% vetch. All good soil building elements. Need some? I can send you some as I have more than I need.

I took last year off and planted cover crops four different times. Oats are becoming a hit on cover crops. Cheap, block out weeds, good soil builder

Nice offer Bruce, thanks. I may take you up on that. One application per season or multiples as PB mentions? BTW thanks PB!

One application. I'm going to be in RI on Sunday with some of the guys from NH. Are you or someone near you going?
