i use an old window set on car tires. its dry, the air gets through, the sun gets through and its cheap. i have pics on my diary if that helps. the window saved my season. even though i caused the problem myself when i planted the seedling on day one outdoors vertically instead of an angle. if you set your plant correctly and trim early side shoots so the stump has no stress or water traps, a cover should not be needed. i learnt this the hard way this season. good luck

i use a 3x3' piece of 1/8" plexy glass, drill a hole in each corner, take 2x2s, cut points one bottom end and screw them on, use a washer on top glass, when complete i push 2x2s into the soil a few inches.2x2s are roughly 2 to 2,6'

What do you guys think about a plastic yard sign?taking 2 of them & placing them at 45 degree angles towards each other & touching at the top. This would make a gable roof over stump.I can duc tape the top where they meet to be water tight.there small metal rods would not be hard to push into soil.No high winds in Kin Cave to worry about it blowing away.Does the cover need to be clear?Does glass create to much heat?Just asking?

I use a method similar to scottie's, I paint the plexi white to reflect the sun off it. Ruff it up with sandpaper to make the paint stick.

Ditto, Matt-Mann. I grow in half shade, so I have to mound the stump area pretty high to keep drainage. If I were to use a cover, I'd make sure it was well ventilated. Handy, your idea doesn't sound too bad.

one thing i have learnt is that the stump needs sunlight if problems do occur. uv light is an awesome fungicide. i did start with a hard roof cover, but too much shade allows fungus / mold etc to grow...... sort of like the mold on the walls of a house that faces away from the sun. painting white on glass or plexi is a good idea as it diffuses the light more evenly.

my stumps don't stay covered all the time only during rain and watering, I don't know anyone who keeps them covered all season. I used to have stump rot every year until I tried this method. Everyone's patch is different so try a few things and find one that works for you!
