Chris Kent grew his world record watermelon in a raised bed and won first place at the GPC event in Allardt last year with a raised bed grown pumpkin.

A few of the growers I've talked to use raised beds. Kirk Mombert, Drew Papez and I'm sure a lot more. I've been building up my patch over the years and it's higher than the rest of my garden. I think by raising it up it warms faster and gives the roots more soft/good dirt to move through. Seems like a good idea to me any way.

a lumber built raised bed has a sharp break to train the main vine over. I would build a dirt ramp to easy the main down. I used mounds with a 5x5 base and a 3x3 top and about 16 inches tall last year. I place an upside down 5 gallon bucket where I want each plant, place my heat cables around it, then bury the buckets to create the mounds. Removing the bucket leaves a perfect planting hole for very large transplants. Anything that improves soil depth and drainage in my heavy clay soil has to help.

Thanks all
I think I will try some raised beds in my garden for my melons and atlantic giants to avoid the diseases in my soil.
See if it will help. My soil is mostly clay anyway

I grew mine in a 167 sq ft raised bed last year. It est 375 (1st year) This year I'm doing 450sq ft each. With the help of bp members I'm hoping for much bigger.
