Im putting up a 15x20 hoop green house and wondering if I could get away with regular 6 mil poly plastic not green house grade.

I have used the 6 mil plastic from Home Depot on my 16x20 hoop houses. Comes in 20 x 100 ft rolls, about $90.Works well.

MP.. if you only want to put the poly on once every 4 or 5 years go with the greenhouse grade.. if your experimenting with a hoop house and don't know if you'll use it long term .. go with the 1 year stuff.. or try the 4 mill , long term .. the green house poly is the best choice in my mind.. good luck

Im buying a 75 feet X 34 feet inscect screen for about $1050$.it will last 10 years so thats.aprox 100$ a year.I will use a blue poly tarp to cover at night when needed.I bought to many rolls of plastic at 100$ a foll & watched 55 mph winds rip it apart,it only takes 1 storm & your done. Now I will work on a remote control device to raise & lower nite tarp!lol I would go Dales way if using plastic,The Home Depot plastic is way to cloudy, greenhouse grade much better.

Remember these big box stores force the manufacturers to make a lower quality product to reduce cost & increase profit. The stuff you buy at home Depot is not the same quality as a smaller supplier would be.

Master P, you will definately need fall protection, too, so go with more durable stuff, or be prepared to recover in August or September. 1 year plastic is meant for covered vapr barriors and drop cloths and just does not have the structural integrity for greenhouse use. It usually isn't UV resistant either and will get brittle and cloudy very fast. If you ever head down to Hinckley, stop by and see how my poly is attached with wiggle wire tracks. it made attaching the plastic to the frame easy.

I've had the HomeDepot type stuff actually split on me. In the wind, it just tears down a seam where it was folded in the package.

4 mil is actually better than 6 mil. I've found 6 mil to be brittle and prone to tear.

Greenhouse grade is obviously better, but I can't find it here. And normally I'm cutting it all up so I don't reuse it anyway.

Buy the good stuff. You do that much work you need something that will last. UV is your killer on plastic, I am at altitude and it fries everything. (4157ft)

www.howardthehumble.com and you can see some pictures of one of our earlier PVC hoops with plastic. (the white stuff was 4mil reinforced Home Depot clearance, the other stuff was UV rated greenhouse plastic after we LEARNED the lesson)(at 6157ft altitude)

And putting out that much buckage for plastic and having it die; trust me the better grade stuff is worth the $$$.

I still use 4mil cheapo roll for one season disposable temporary hoops made for pumpkin shelters in spring. Look in my previous year diaries in spring and you will see them. I expect those to be 100% disposable as the pipes will bend (and sharp bend too) and the plastic will trash.

Only things I can save off a one season are the main spine and the rebar, heat tape, acco binder clips, spring clamps, brooder light, feed tub and 5 gallon pail.

Like Darren posted it really isnt that much more for the greenhouse grade 4 year plastic.its around a hundred bucks for the size I need.
