Has anybody tried it? Just found some pics that looked interesting but I would like to hear from anyone that has tried it.

Do you mean mulching with straw? If so then yes I employ that practice on one level or another each year.

I never would have thought of this method if you hadn't posted your question.

Google "straw bale gardening" for numerous articles and videos on the subject.

We're talking STRAW, not hay, for those who might get confused.

I have friends who use it. The straw becomes the rooting media and you add fertilizer and water. it can work very well for normal gardening. I don't think it would be an advantage for AG's. AG's would fill the straw bale with roots extremely fast and be out into the soil anyway, so you might as well ammend the soil in the first place.

It won't work well in our hot climate. Easier to build a box to do raised bed gardening....

Some people around here plant their potatoes right on top of the ground and cover them with straw. They grow well, are easy to harvest and very clean. The problem is that very few farmers around here are growing oats or wheat any more and straw is getting hard to find.
