Is there a specific reason or reasons why Giant Veggie growers are such Great People? Could it be the friendship and generosity as shown to all by Ron and Pap? What personal character characteristics do you believe are involved? Lets see how many positives we can list. I started this message, because, it appears in the last few months there have been too many negative posts. Let's accentuate the positive!!

I guess I should have never started this post. I was sincerely hoping for an all positive, uplifting topic.

We are nurterers! I think anyone who grows anything (plants or animals) with the passion that we do is a person who cares about life in general. It forces you to think about things from a different perspective, which helps you develop a sense of empathy. And those are the best type of people in my opinion!

GP growers can take a beating and come back for more. We're solid, tough, resilient, humble, and sometimes we smell good. How many people do you know that will do this much work for a hobby? Ninety-eight percent of us won't take home any sort of prize that comes close to close to renumerating what we spend on this. If you factor in the time, nobody does. A good GP grower learns something new every year, and they also learn that there are more things to learn that they hadn't though possible before. They work a lifetime for these skills, and then freely give them away to anyone who really wants to learn.
I think a lot of GP growers believe in God. But that's a whole other topic... just suffice it to say that "I think" believing in God is good for people.
Does that get this thread going? ;-)

The sharing of ideas, one on one talks with world class growers, a bunch of great people having fun. What else could you ask for in a hobby? I'm in.

I think because you have to have a sense of humour to grow these. Half the time something goes wrong, weather, vine borers, varmits etc. maybe were more resiliant?

Who else puts boards on there feet to walk in there gardens? Who else can laugh at there self (for something they did)and cry for something that happen, all in one day and still go back out to the same garden and do it all again ? Who else have so many friends (with out even knowing them)? I would say us (pumpkin and watermelons) growers. Oh yes and many other (giant things), and enjoy every minute of it ! Thank God I can do it !

Every time I see something about putting boards on one's feet I laugh heartily (at myself). 30 years ago I thought I had a brilliant idea. I hammered 8D nails through the boards that I had fastened to my feet, intending to not only not compact my soil, but I was determined to aerate it to boot. I thought I walked around quite carefully, but when I later turned on my watering system, I had geysers shooting high in the air all over the pumpkin patch. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!!!!!!

Anything involving working in the dirt, nice good loamy rich dirt, has got to be good. I tend to be my happiest with potmix in my hairpart and up to my elbows playing in the plants.
Anyone else that likes playing in the dirt has to be a soulbro/sis.
And yes, this hobby/sport/addiction/insanity, takes a certain type of person to keep at it.
Not to mention the camradarie (and the adult beverages)
Watching someone else gain a purpose to life again, even watering for them a week before weighoff, so they can whup my *ss at the scale... priceless.
Not to mention my newfound Angus-McGuyver-is-the-Patron-Saint-of-competition-growers-everywhere abilities to bodge what I need out of what I have when I need it (more or less)AND my confidence to do so.
[Biz, you coming down this fall? Love to see you and the Wiz again.]

other than the occasional amelio person ( who i have on my ignore list, because i think hes a complete distraction to anything positive in the hobby ) the greatest majority of growers are good people ,well intended and, just want to have fun learning and growing the dream.
i have always maintained that bad people do not spend their time growing giant veggies.it would be the last item on their list of things to do.they might steal them but, spend the time and work required to grow um ? never.
after all its just a hobby, not our livelyhood so, putting the hobby in its proper placing is very important.
family and friends come before pumpkins and weigh-offs. though sometimes they are one in the same as i have met many great friends through this hobby. only a couple i would not have a beer with.

AG growers are nice because they are team oriented, willing to do favors, they answer questions, they give you back up plants when yours freeze, they like to chat and most times offer beer, when you get together for a patch tour they offer food and most of the time if you need seeds they will just give them to you, if you bring your kids along on a improptu patch tour they readily accept them as well and offer them treats, they also will deliver patch ammendments and write soil adjustment plans and spray programs for you, they send you private emails saying great job with that kin and also help you harvest your pumpkin...the list goes on...thanks pumpkin growers, you know who you are!
