Have you ever wondered how much you should see in PPM gains from the amendments you've added? Here's a brief overview. 1 PPM=2 lbs/acre. if you added 2 lbs of calcium to an acre of land you should see a gain of 1 PPM. This is the scientific standard for our soiltests. With that being said, what we add in amendments should be able to be tracked. Does this mean what we add will be what we get in return? No way! Every soil is different and reacts different. However if you track what you put in you can see what you should get in return and then when you test again in spring you can see what you actually get from your soil. Make sense? This way you can find a trend to your soil and how it reacts to additions. So fueled by this idea I created an excel spreadsheet. (cont.)

The Spreadsheet tracks additions of nutrients, liming agents and manures. It uses soil test results and any additions and gives you the potential return from your additions. It can give you a forecast of PH change based on soil type, both from lime and sulfur. It has 100 spots to add any lime, fertilizer or manure and their analysis values on the second page. These will be stored in the sheet until deleted by the user, always there for future use. It calculates base saturations and eCEC for estimated increase. It compares nutrient to nutrient ratios, based on the ratios used by Western Labs.

By knowning what we put in and what we get back it will help us in the future plan our additions. I really hope this tool can help the growing community. I was heppy to reveal it this week at the NEGPGA Winter Dinner.

Currently the only way to get this spreadsheet is by emailing me at [email protected]. I am hoping to park a downloadable version somewhere for easy access. If you are interested in trying it out please email me for a copy.

Thank you all

The first few i sent out had an error if no manure was added. I sent out a corrected version to these folks, If your sheet doesn't give an end PPm value with no manure adde please email me again and i'll get the corrected version out. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I believe i got all those who were effected.

Thank you Dan for pointing this out.

I have designed this spreadsheet in Excel 2007, there is a compatibility issue with older versions. If you are running Office 97-2003 you can try downloading this compatibilty pack that should allow it to run in older versions.
