I doubt that will be happening Wayne - I think Jim has only been growing for about 4 years - he and Kelsey will be getting an orange jacket and a big ass trophy though

I agree Andy , it is long over due for two former world record holders .

In my humble opinion I think it is long overdue for Larry and Gerry. In the past as many as four people were inducted in the same year. Certainly two people, Larry and Gerry Checkon could be inducted simultaneously. I think the way it works is that nominations are made to the GPC Board and then they decide. I guess it is over for this year but I would like to nominate Larry and Gerry for next year. Does it make a nomination official to enter it here? Or is there something else needed? Anyone want to second the nomination? They have been growing for years, each has broken the world record and they are extremely active in the PGPGA. In fact, they are the backbone of the group. Many of our PGPGA summer get-togethers are held at their house and garden. They put together our Newsletter etc. etc. They also do the majority of the work for our seed auction. They should be inducted into in the Hall of Fame next time around. Seconds anyone? Marv

Is there an official way to nominate?

Nominations are in fact closed for this year's induction. Both Larry and Gerry as well as Jake were nominated for all their efforts by the growers. Voting is done by the current GPC Hall of Fame members as well as the board of directors of the GPC. Each qualified nominee is ranked (1-10) by each voting member on a private ballot. Once all the scoring is tabulated, based upon total points received, a person can be elected if they meet certain predetermined levels.

We will be going over this process in Las Vegas next month and are always looking for ways to streamline our processes.

All nominees and inductees will be announced at Las Vegas during the awards banquet and show on Saturday night.

Oh, so the GPC members can neither nominate a person nor vote for one. Maybe the GPC at their next meeting could consider allowing the membership to make nominations and vote. This seems a more open and democratic way to go about doing things to me. Marv

Marv, ANYONE can nominate someone for the GPC Hall of Fame. it takes a little bit more than just a vote and a second. You actually have to write something down that recounts their successes and involvement. Just like a voting pamphlet, you need to make an 'argument' in favor so that the voters have something to base their vote on.

I don't get to vote on the pro sports hall of fame? There are a lot of players I'd like to see in there as well but I don't get to vote.

In my opinion there are three ways for you to be able to express yourself in this arean: 1) Write up a formal nomination for a grower that you feel fits the criteria necessary to warrant GPC Hall of Fame status; 2) At some point put yourself out there to run for the GPC Board of Directors so you have a vote or 3) Become a positive influence within your GPC community, win several GPC events and then be nominated by your peers to hopefully some day get voted into the GPC Hall of Fame.

It's up to you.

What is your point Tree Doctor? I am not a member of the Pro Sports group but I am a member of the GPC. I was told that I could not nominate anyone for the GPC Hall of Fame because only members of the board and people already in the HoF were able to do so. Are you telling me that is not the case? If not, then who do I send my nomination to?

When we call for nominations next Fall, you can send them to your regional GPC representative. I don't know who told you that you couldn't nominate someone, that's not the case.

So if I read this right, only one person per year is selected for the Hall of Fame. I can't argue with any of the names above but are you saying that these people weren't nominated/or received enough votes

Andy, remember this is not the Giant Pumpkin Growing Hall of fame, it is the GPC Hall of Fame. The GPC didn't even exist when some of those people were growing.

as a current hall of fame member i consider it an honor and a great responsibility to make a nomination and/or place my vote each year.

i agree that at some point larry, gerry, quinn, steve, plus many.many, other growers /contributors to the hobby, will be considered and voted on.

when nominating and or voting i consider the body of this persons work. the big picture, contributions to the hobby as well as individual grower accomplishments.they go hand in hand.

Below is straight from the GPC site:

The following criteria were set out as suggested by HOF members.
The criteria to be met are as follows:
A) Number of years growing (must have been an active grower for at least 10 years documented by entries at GPC weigh-off sites)
B) Number of awards won during career (must have won at least 5 local/regional GPC sanctioned events, bonus for regional & world records)
C) Club/GPC participation (must have taken a leadership role for 5 years or more at a club, GPC site coordinator, Executive committee member)
D) Generosity of time and seeds and knowledge (must have given freely of his/her time to the betterment of this hobby including public speaking, seed donations and volunteering at any level, organizing club events)
To be eligible, a person must meet at least 75% (3 out of 4) of the above criteria.

i think if the gpc feels they have to add someone every year it waters down those who truly deserve to be there.

This is the nomination process. Item 1 allows for no one to be nominated. Dave, I would like to see your list, under the current guidelines I can think of many many people who exceed the requirements to be nominated.

The nomination process is as follows:
1. Each member nominates (1) eligible person from their region. The nominee must meet desired criteria set above. If a member does not feel they have a qualifying person in their region they do not have to nominate anyone.
2. These names are all then put on a ballot for the voting procedure.
3. All ballots are dispersed to current GPC Committee members and current HOF members.
4. Each candidate is then ranked 1-10 (if there are 10 entries) by the voting member and returned to the GPC committee member expediting this process.
5. The ballot would then be scored in reverse fashion (10 pts for a 1st place, 9 pts for a second place etc….)
6. Entry into the HOF would then be granted if the following is met:
a. A score of 85% or higher is reached as a total from the possible amount of points available.
b. A person receives at least 70% 1st place votes
7. Normally one candidate per year is granted entry into the HOF. However the committee may choose not to induct anyone or may induct a maximum of two, in the event of a tie, or in the event of a team nomination.

So, when the vote is in and the winner determined would it be possible to post the top 5 people that got votes and what the scores for them were? Also, if one of the requirements is that a person must have 70% of the first place votes, there can never be more than one person selected each year since 2 people cannot each get 70% of the first place votes as that is mathmatically impossible. Getting 85% of the total votes also seems a bit difficult unless more than one vote is taken and some people are eliminated earlier than others. Marv

A Nominee can not be on the GPC board, Dave and Carol will be allowd to be nominated 2 years after Dave has left his post as President of the GPC

Pap, can you explain to me how two people can get 70% of the first place votes? If there are a lot of deserving candidates out there with a backlog it would seem more than one person should be brought in each year just to get caught up. You agree or not? There are many many many things about the GPC that are right. Should the other things never be addressed or fixed? Spring is a long way off but here in Miami Beach the weather is fine. I am in the sun getting my skin ready for the sun in the garden. Marv

Marv, item 6 appears to be an "either or" so hypothetically in a field of ten nominees, three people could advance. One by getting 70% of the first place votes and two by scoring 85% or better.

How about Leonardo? He's been growing giants for eleven years. Won HMB. Multiple wins at Elk Grove. GOTY. 1704 pounder. 4948 pounds for three pumpkins in one year. Also, he's always more than happy to share seeds or advice to anyone who asks.
