If your in this hobby for the money You made a mistake
Take the plaque, ribbons etc. 10 years from now you'll have something, cash will be gone

Agreed with Eddy, won my first Rosette (and some prize money) this year and am thrilled with both.

Money is gone...Rosette proudly displayed in the family room.

I proudly display my plaques and rosettes...who are these people who win money...and how can I become one of them..when I have to compete against Kevin Marsh, Chris Stevens, some Ailts and Hopkins guys

I'm happy with just the Rosettes, They don't take up as much wall space but retain all the memories and meaning without the bulk.

It's all about the ribbon. I have a nice little collection that mean a lot more than a cheque.

No all cash here, if I eventually get a rosette, it will be of more value than a cheque here. Some cash couldnt hurt though. Ribbon first please.

For ten years I enjoyed receiving the rosettes and this year I received the GPC's first place trophy. It's the most beautiful award I've ever received because only I know the mud, sweat, and tears I had to endure to receive it. As stated above, the money doesn't last, but the memories do.

Weighoff just isn't the same without a nice big ol' rosette to hang on a winner (fruit, veggie, or the grower themselves).

Depends how often you win. A couple of plaques and ribbons are nice, a room full needs to be dusted. At this point in my life, i'd take the cash...(diapers would be good too lol;)

I like to have a plaque so I can have the weight engarved on it.I did this with my 96,97,98,99 Pt Elgin Stuff so I can remember each year at a glance.I think the GWG should have a big green Rosette with logo on center button.Just my opinion as a member.

anyone who has ever been in our "PUMPKIN SHACK" would know how much those ribbons and awards mean to us.yes its nice to win cash at times, but the ribbons as eddy z said best LAST FOREVER.

Mark, I think you should start a similar thread on the watermelon growing forum. I believe you will find similar results. The GWG club needs to come up with some good non monetary awards to go with the cash we offer. I believe nearly all of us would prefer to add something that will perpetually remind us of our accomplishments. And I particularly believe you we should offer something very nice to go to any club grower who sets a new world record.

My opinion it's all about the cash. Plaques and ribbons get thrown in a pile in the garage at my house. If it's all cash, and that person wants a plaque or rosette, that person can buy their own to hang

My cash winnings go on the bar at a post weigh off party and all those who come to the weigh off or any barfly that happens to be present that night drinks for free until it is gone or until the bar closes. This is their reward for the support, but mostly it is cuz they have to listen to me yap about pumpkins all year long. And those that know me can attest I am loud and and never shut up. Lol. And I usually wear the ribbon around my neck that night in a stupor. Then i proudly display them where I see them everyday hanging as a reminder of past successes and also to help motivate me to keep the eye on the prize all season long. I have never won a first place ribbon. When I do (not if) it will be cherished. Ribbons and cash prizes are a nice combo in my book.

Plaques & ribbons favored here. Got my first ones this year and especially like the hand made "truck" from Kentucky Growers at Bear Wallow!

I have no room for all the awards. Not important to me anyway. Perhaps if I really achieve something special I will think different.

I say save the money, invest in the hobby. Extra $10 in plaque savings in my pocket, not important.

I took a picture of it (the check) and will put it, into a frame.

Plaques & Rosettes or Cash are all extrinsic rewards for taking a fruit to a weigh-off. They sure are nice to receive and can add to the motivation to grow competitively but for me anyway, they are not the reasons I grow. That said, if I had several competitive fruit I'd try to maximize the cash payout to some extent. I believe that every grower entering a weigh-off should receive recognition in some extrinsic form other than cash (plaque, ribbon, button, t-shirt, etc....) John

Plaques and rosettes displayed proudly in living room! Cash is nice but not the reason for doing this. Another award not yet mentioned is the GPC jackets. The orange blazer will always be a hope but the GPC jacket is something we will drive for until we get one. Great idea by the GPC.

interesting thread! i vote CASH. all the ribbons, plaques, etc are in our basement packed in a box. don't even know how to get rid of them b/c i dont want to trash them and i dont exactly think goodwill wants them either. if i ever move into a mansion then i'll have a pumpkin room and hang them all up. as long as i live in the real world though, i just dont have enough space!

thanks for the compliment regarding our sngpg custom awards.
i cant take all the credit though. i usually design something hand it off to joe jutras who produces them in his shop, then we work together finishing them off.
we will continue this practice until such time as we run out of new designs, etc. lol

I say nice plaques for the top 3. Plaques somewhat smaller for 4th and 5th. Rosettes for 6th through 10th. Then if there is money left, divide it accordingly among the top 5...

The MGPG's give out awards and cash at our yearly meeting. Bob wells makes a wooden plaque for the largest pumpkin grown off a Michigan seed called (The Mittten). I think anyone who has seen this award will say it's "something special". I won one in 2009 and the money is long gone but years from now I will still remember what I accomplished.

I would be happy with a ribbon w/a safety pin. The kind I got in school track & field and lots & lots of money(so I can spend it on next year). I have won and placed in many of fishing tournaments the trophies go on the wall for a year or two then was stored in a closet until they got thrown away The only thing that truly remains are the memories. (but don't forget the pic's cuz the memories goes to)

^ ok handy, i will admit i have the awesome gpc world record one that joe jutras made (wooden and shaped like a pumpkin) hanging in my hallway. i consider that a "work of art" and not a plaque though.

If you don't want your plaques and ribbons, look for a local historical society/museum, and donate them. If they are dedicated to the local history of the area, that is a good place for them to go...they will probably be displayed as a part of local history and culture!

My preference would be plaques, rosettes and then money... in that order. My pet peeve is seeing everything these days based on money. I'd hate to see this sport go any further in that direction than it already has. I'm doing this for the challenge and personal gratification of it all. 40 years from now I hope to be in my rocking chair admiring my plaques and rosettes... I doubt I'll be counting any money I've won at that point.

What I'm finding here & talking to others on the phone,The people who dont want plaques & rosettes are buried in them. There boxing them up.some are going to the curb.I feel if we dont keep new ones coming for the newbee's in the clubs. Then the clubs will loose there appeal for new members to join, & I would like the WR plaques I hope are in my future. The newbee is our lifeline as chrildren are our future for the world.Ok lets all join hands & sing We are the World.
Merry Christmas to all !!
