Friends, as mentioned on a recent post, Mr. Bryson mentioned on a TV interview that he used maple syrup as a foliar application for his prize 1818 pumpkin. Is this a common practice? A bit of humor? biologically rational? If the latter, what does it provide? Simple sugars for pumpin growth maybe? My wife already thinks I'm nuts, and spraying syrup on my plants just might prove it! Thanks! Elmer

There have been growers using maple sugar and or tea for a few years) Some dilute the syrup and spray it, Some use maple tree leaves in a compost tea. It's real

Maple syrup is mainly sucrose, with small amounts of fructose and glucose. It also contains potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese and amino acids, as well as antioxidant compounds. Last, but not least, maple syrup is a pre-biotic, helping to nourish pro-biotic bacteria which enrich the soil and help to sustain the processes which grow big pumpkins.

It's like anything else in this hobby. Just another piece of the puzzle. I am pretty sure that maple syrup is not the only thing Jim and Kelsey use in the patch.

Sorta thinkin that maple syrup, sorta equates w/ Molasses,(sugar cane syrup) which is somethin that a lot of Dill's AG growers have been using for years!!! More so to feed to the goodies in the soil & as a food source in Compost Tea, but have also read as a foliar spray!!! Peace, Wayne

Molasses is quite a bit cheaper than pure maple syrup.
