As many of you already know, we took the 1469 to the Martha Stewart Show this week. We had a blast. The show airs today the 14th. Sorry about the short notice. If you see the show, you will know why they wanted to keep things under "wraps". Larry

I'm recording it right now at high quality to DVD. Unfortunately, I don't have any way to duplicate it. Maybe this is a good opportunity for me to buy a DVD recorder for my computer. :-)

I watched the show and was disappointed. Larry got to talk probably about a minute and Gerry didn't get to talk at all. They didn't spend enough time on it. Larry's World Record Pumpkin was followed by a boy who twists balloons into animals and that was followed by a guy who brought a 55 year old teddy bear that looked more like a monkey, maybe it was a monkey. It was better than the Letterman Show with Gerry's World Record Pumpkin, but not much better. These people just don't understand about pumpkins. After all the work and effort that goes into it they look upon it as more an oddity than an achievement and just don't seem to have enough respect for the pumpkins or the people who grow them. My opinion of Martha went a little lower. I hope Larry and Gerry had a good time in New York. They were smiling and looked good. Larry did a great job of representing the pumpkin growing community, as usual.

Yeah, the segment wasn't really very long. I'm sure that there is a lot more that Larry had to say. But, I get the impression that Martha herself actually is interested in giant pumpkins. So, I wouldn't be surprised if she does grow the seed that Larry gave her. She's just the obsessive type that might put in the time required to grow a biggie.
But, should we really be all that surprised that some people don't have a genuine appreciation for the time and work that it takes to put into growing a giant pumpkin? I don't think so. As much fun as we have, and as seriously as we take pumpkin growing, I think we probably should admit that it's a pretty frivolous activity. It's not any more frivolous than any other hobby/sport that brings people joy. But, just like I don't understand and don't have much interest in model trains, I can see how some people wouldn't understand or care about what we enjoy doing.

Did the rest of you get an email to attend this show? Earlier this year VGVGA got an email asking questions and was saying NE growers would be a part of the audience and then we never heard another thing about it.

Martha genuinely seems interested in all things pumpkin related, but you have to remember, she has advertisers to keep happy. The majority of viewers and the majority of advertisers probably see the world record pumpkin as an oddity as well as an achievement, but it all comes down to entertainment value, and unfortunately, a world record pumpkin can't be twisted into the shape of a monkee no matter how hard you try. At least she's giving some national coverage for the Checkon's, let's be happy she's at least doing that.
Now, how many emails do you think Larry has gotten requesting seeds since he posted this?

I can tell you that Martha was genuinely interested and would have loved to have spent a lot more time on it. There was a lot of question as to whether or not the pumpkin would make to the set and only arrived there a hour or so before show time. Doors and even hinges had to be removed and it made it by just 2 inches. Martha talked to us for a long time after the show and I believe their will be future opportunities for pumpkin growers. She said the pumpkin was "the most beautiful thing she has ever seen". Everyone their was extremely nice to us and it was the most fun I have had in a very long time. Larry

That's the most important thing Larry. And like what was posted above, she did give it national coverage & That's a GOOD thing. If Gerry & yourself were treated well & the experience was fun then that's all that matters.

Hey guys, I used to work at a local ABC affiliate, and I can tell you from experience that TV producers are looking at the overall picture when they are putting a show together and don't always have time for the details. It's all about the soundbite. Even if it was just a 60 second segment (and that's a long time on tv)...it's great PR for the giant pumpkin growing community. We should all be thanking Martha Stewart for giving us a forum on a nationally syndicated home & garden show. And thanks Larry & Gerry for representing AG growers well!

Don't you think Martha will just have her highly paid landscaping team grow the pumpkin for her and then take credit for it?

It doesn't matter who grows it for Martha. As long as the seed hits the ground and a pumpkin shows up on her set come October of next year, regardless of whether it's 100 or 1000 pounds, it's still good publicity for giant pumpkin growers everywhere.

the thing everyone should learn to say when being interviewed is where newbies can obtain good seed because now we might see these newbies next yr growing bad seed hoping beyond hope they get a monster of the seed they bought on ebay. Im very outspoken on this as i grew a generic seed and cant wait till next season with good seed as for a monster pumpkin wow good job thats huge and martha should of went into more depth on growing them but nevertheless what a great time of yr this is to see all the work and labor go rewarded. may everyone get there seeds this winter and grow em big next yr

Saw the show today. Great job Larry! I was little disappointed you weren't given enough time to answer her questions in full but you did great with the little time she gave you. What a sight your pumpkin truly is!
Does anyone have Martha's e-mail? I was wondering if she might like to make a trade. :-)

I think I got it...How to get your time on the show plus take the ballon mans time away from him. Larry next year take a bunch of ballons fill them with helium and twist them little suckers into shape and attach them all to your pumpkin and float that baby.. That should give you double exposure... hehehe I did not get to see the show either... Glad to see you get the title this year,, Great Growing!!!

Any bets on what weight Martha's team will get out of that seed next year if they grow it? I'll say 179lbs...

Hi guys! It's me, Steve Sedlar from the mailing list.... somehow Duncan got my address blocked for posting a year or two ago (ACCIDENLTY, I hope! Grr....),so I have't been able to post, but I'm always keeping up with everything.... WAY TO GO LARRY!
As for Martha, please lay off her guys, she IS VERY interested in pumpkin growing, she grows some herself, and I'm sure she will put good use to that seed next year!
The way TV production works, everything is limited by time, I'm sure she would have loved to spend the whole hour with Larry, so don;t be so hard on her....!
I recorded it and I GOT A CLIP ONLINE! For some reason I got a lot of static, and I had to use major compression, so it's not the BEST (I can put up a better one for download if anyone is interested), but it is fairly decent.... I edited all of Larry's parts and references to the pumpkin together into a highly compressed 15 MB file.
Go to the link below, and be patient, since it will take while to load up, especially if you ar eon dial-up, it could take 20-30 minutes or more. Broadband (Cable or DSL) users should have no problem....
You were great Larry!
Someome PLEASE post this to the Mallorn (hort.net) Mailing List, since, well, it won't let me post....Thanks!
Here is the link for all:
http://media.putfile.com/larrymartha
Let me know if anyone needs a better quality file. I'm working on getting it capped without the static....
Congraulations again Larry!

Oh and speaking of Martha being interested.... she asked Larry if she could come out and follow his growing techniques, so they may do an entire show on it sometime. Trust me, she is VERY interested in this stuff!
