All good suggestions but nearly as hard to obtain. Other suggestions might include:
735 Pukos (846 Calai x self) 798 Carlson-Petersen '04 (735 Pukos X self) 724.5 Carlson '02 (846 Calai x self) 872 Carlson-Petersen '04 (724.5 Carlson x self)
The 801, 940 Mombert '00, & the 846 have all been selfed & maybe even sibbed by other growers too. I'll look around later.

How about 1125 Frantz 04' (869.5 calai X 1225 Jutras) The 1225 jutras was a VERY good looking pumpkin and the 1125 was also very nice color... perfect in my opinion. Pics of the 1125 can be seen in my diary. Im growing it next year with the hopes of a 1000 plus pound beauty!

Steve, have any of the 801, 940, 846 selfed/sibbed fruit been heavy to the charts? It's been our experience the shiney orange ones go light...
Sambo if you like orange our 410# from 2000 (810 Dill X Waterman 1-ton cross) throws blood red thick fruit.

This brings to mind a thread a few years ago on the hort.net giant pumpkin list (back when it was *the* place to discuss this stuff). It had to do with classifying the individual genes involved here. There is an "R" gene, which refers to the color red or red-orange. There is a "B" gene which is the creamy, yellow, light orange, etc. and a "b" gene which is green.
B is dominant over b. R is "eventually dominant" over b, meaning that the color may show green throughout the season and then turn red late in the year...
B and R appear to be co-dominant.
Some fruits seem to have the R gene set (RR)? the most notable being that long lost 609 Laemelle.
Anyway, I'll have to dig up the thread to remember more.

yes, of course my own seeds are available, too. I didn't offer them as I thought you were looking for proven ones...
497 Reiss 04 (801.5 Stelts 97 X self) 472 Reiss 04 (801.5 Stelts 97 X 1016 Daletas) 401 Reiss 04 (783 Daletas 00 X 801.5 Stelts 97) 269 Reiss 04 (810 Dill 99 X 1016 Daletas)
I have more crosses but these should be the best for your purpose... let me know if you are interested!

Cliff...just remember old threads aren't neccessarily true anymore...as we grow we learn. I'll bet dollars to donuts that the color rules you mention are debatable today....G

Was the 567.5 Mombert (609 Laemelle x 616 Holland) the only 609 cross? or where the rest just forgotten?

Thanks for all the advice and seed offers, but I have plenty of seeds with the genetics mentioned. I was just wondering which ones would add orange. Thanks again

Gads, orange shiney and smooth is not exclusive to light pumpkins. My daughters 616 this year was orange, shiney and smooth and over 13% above the estimated weight for it's size. It was grown from her 576 from last year which was a remarkably unpretty pumpkin with all it's pretty genes not being expressed. It's predominantly 567.5 and 940 98 Mombert genetics with a bit of 935 Lloyd thrown in. You can look at my diary and see it there. Molly wants to grow her 616 next year. I will grow her 576 and see what dad can do with it. Good color remains a bit of a crap shoot, what with dominants and recessives and who knows how many genes involved in the expression of fruit color. This remains an area that can be difficult to predict and it's best do plant a proven color producer and hope yours isn't the ugly duckling of the family.

inevitably, i have to add-in my 728.5 Gerry '01 cross, 845 Bobier X 1140 Stelts. look at the 728.5, then the 735 Drake on the AGGC, its 1st known offspring. obviously, 1140=good color-adder! and yes, Mr. Frantz, you had a very pretty pumpkin. i showed that puppy off for you at work! people passed out! well, just me, but whatever! i'm a people! lol....anyway.............eric

I'm looking at that old thread now, it's mostly a discussion between Mike Brock and Al Eaton. One of the best I've seen... Of course, it's older so this list would probably reject it. (?)
O-Kaaay, I'll keep it to myself. LOL

The whole crossing to add color is a Guestimate at best. In 2003 I planted a 934 Kennedy (846 Calai x 805 Pukos). I prefer the orange and pretty ones. Thinking the 805 would add weight to the 846. I planted this seed. I ended up with a white fruit that turned army truck green during the last 3 weeks of September. It was 17% heavy though so I guess i got the weight part.

659 Troy 03 for shape, COLOR, and heat tolerance.
I am planting 5 of them in 05. I plan to self all of them in an effort to eliminate the "guestimate" factor as much as possible in 06, and in 07.
