I bought seeds last year from Don L the Pumpkins guy. Grew a 498 pound oraange pumpkin. I saved the seeds and started a good amount in small containers. I also gave my father in law 2 plants. One of his plants has a soccer sized yellow giant pumpkin growing on it. The other plant is nearly 3 times larger and has only one baseball sized Green fruit. I grew 2 plants. One looks like a regular jack-o-lantern pumpkin plant (even less than that) and the other plant is like my father in law's.......the pumpkins are green and not yellow. Can someone please tell me what I have growing here? Thank you in advance.

Some pumpkin seeds throw orange and green fruit. Do you know the cross of the seed you ordered? It might have been crossed with a squash. Also if the seed you saved was open pollinated it could also be a squash cross.

No. Last year I didn't know what I was doing (as compared to this year where I don't know what I am doing but at least asking some questions) so I stuck the pedigree envelope on a stick which of course has turned into this year's dirt. I remember that it had two numbers.....872 and 903. I even tried to contact Don L. who said he didn't keep record to that extent. That's what I get for being a cheap skate and not getting new seeds. At least my father in law has got a plant that has the yellow fruit.

please don't be upset. some pumpkins actually start-out green and turn orange toward the end of the season. even the best of growers and the best of seeds can throw green squashes instead of the "projected" super-orange half-tonners which may be desired. true, if the pumpkins were open-pollinated by the bees, they could have been pollinated by a bee or bees carrying pollen from another garden, where a squash could have resided. it is possible that even a few pollen grains could have been from a squash, the rest from your other pumpkin flowers.
sounds like one of the numbers on your seed packet could have been 903 Holland...the other i will look in my seed book and see if i got any of that cross (with the 872 something) sorry the 872 is not ringin' my bell at the moment.
if you have any fruit that are growing bigger, hey, \ good for you----the next one to get huge COULD end up like last year's 498! start learning about manual, hand-pollination of AG flowers. there are tons of posts about it.....i just gotta go now....

well, okay, i do not have any Don Langevin crosses consisting of those two seeds or plants. but, if i were to plant any of the seeds i DO have from Mr. Langevin, i would have a heck of a growing season! i'd better think about that next April, if i'm smart...eric PS, CP-----you have mail, or are about to......'pal2
