I noted that all the larger pumpkins are yellow orange in color. I have been growing orange pumpkins. Now my question. If I want to get a larger fruit (>1000lb)should I cross my orange seeds with a yellow orange fruit, or grow yellow orange fruit? My parent plants for 2007 were 1229 Holland and 1346 Pitura and the reverse cross. My largest this year 700 lbs.
Thanks Tim

tim,It depends on whats more important to you.If a bigger pumpkin is your dream then cross something like 998.6 pukos into it( big and the colors a decent orange). If superorange is a must dan bowles and george poirer had super orange fruit this year-you might contact them for the seed that grew their orange ones.

Thanks for the plug Joe, that would be my 1046.6 from '06, most seeds were given away last winter so they are out there and locatable. The few that hit dirt all went shiney orange.
I grew that seed to 1186.6 (3% +) this year and crossed it with the 897.5 Davies, an underplanted seed that throws orange and heavy.
These will be available to folks that will plant them next year.

If I remember right the 1225 Jutras was Very orange, and even took best looking award. The 998 Pukos also grew the new european record this year, and was a decently orange pumpkin.
Does anyone know how many seeds the 1689 had? It was crossed with the 1225.
