What is the general opinion regarding a selfed offspring of a champ. For example how would the seeds from a fruit grown from a 1097.5 x SELF compare to the original Beachy?
Would the good be further enhanced?

1450 was a sibbed seed.
there will be a few nice pumpkins grown from selfed seeds. maybe big enough to get more people to try them.

What I like about certain selfed seeds, is that if the selfed pumpkin had desireable characteristics...size/shape/color/thick walls/etc....those characteristics would hopefully have a decent chance of being passed down to it's offspring. I don't know if this is actually the case, but it seems logical. I've seen instances that support this, and some that don't. I'm wondering if someone crossed a desireable 845 Bobier X self with a desireable 898 Knaus X self.....would the progeny do as well as the 1068 Wallace?

I should add that I grew a 603.5 Muller this year(845 Nesbit X self) and it weighed in at 1041 lbs. I was pleased, as it's a personal best.

Doug - along your lines of thinking:
427 Wolf 2002 (760 Patrick x 476 Beachy)
the 760 is a selfed 801, and the 476 is a selfed 876 Lloyd, making it "kind of" an 846 Calai remake, except selfed on each side.
the 427 was grown a couple times. it grew the 575 Raymont (1st place at early show):

if you're loking for 898 type genes:
463 Rhinehart 2004 (820 Werner x 870 Powers)
820 is a selfed 1007 Brown, and the 870 is a selfed 1048 Cox. Jeff Rhinehart used pollen from my 870 plant that year to make the cross, so i have some of those seeds.

I selfed the 1233 Reiss last year, had three folks plant this year, all the pumpkins came out just like Mom. Except one was around 500lbs for a first time grower up in Wyoming. I grew the selfed Reiss right next to the original, both plants looked the same except the self had a bit more vigourous growth, probably a better root system.
