I don't know who would want to do this... Just as beauty is subjective, as pointed out in many posts, so is ugliness. What's your choice?

The 598 Janowiak blows away everything else I've seen. There is a pic of it on the AGGC site. Its so ugly its just cool. George told me a week or two ago he has seeds from it if someone is interested. I might try it in the field this year just to see what it looks like. The cross is 961 Daletas x 781 Daletas. Maybe George can post the pic.

Here is a pic of the 598 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=42613 I don't know if was a factor in its ugliness but, It was really hot when I pollinated and hot that whole year. Chances are if you planted a seed from it, the progeny would look pretty good. This pumpkin was loaded with seeds and I have a lot left if any body wants some. GJGEM@sbcglobal.net

The 958 Ciliberto grew me a nice ugly one that earned the ugliest pumpkin award at Nekoosa, I crossed it with the 1127 Glasier the reverse cross. Both seeds grew weird looking offspring that were heavely cantaloped with not much color.

I've got some seeds of the 598 Janowiak myself. My tenant also has the giant pumpkin bug now,and likes grotesque shapes, maybe I'll see if she will try it -- I'm too scared! I was hoping for suggestions for two pumpkins, female and male. Instead of hoping that the best traits of each parent show up in the cross, it is kind of a thought experiment to imagine what if the worst traits of each parent show up.

In my opinion, if you want ugly, plant anything with 1139 Sherwood, or further back to 695 Handy in it. Puts the ug in ugly. Also puts the heav in heavy. Since ugly and heavy often seem to go hand-in-hand, ugly can be a good thing when it comes to pumpkins!

Jim:
Seeing the Swarts boys and Joe Platte's "Sherwood offspring" firsthand, I have seen your 'ugly & heavy" genes at work! :) By the way, at our genetics talk at the Michigan meeting, we discussed Michigan's most promising crosses of 2006. I put the 1229 Platte (1028 Sherwood x 1029 Kurilich) on top of the list. His 1229 off your 1028 had mixed color, but good high round shape & symmetry and was heavy. It was pollinated with a 1029 Kurilich that grew to 1047...again good high round shape, nice ribbing, symmetrical, but also nice orange color. It will be interesting to see what the offspring look like. My guess is slightly improved color and GREAT shape & symmetry AND potential for high/heavy weights. I doubt it will get planted outside of Michigan in 2007. But I have a hunch it will be sought after in 08...

I agree, the 1229 Platte could be a super seed.

slightly improved color! Anything would be an improvement. I agree that it should be an awesome cross. I will be keeping my eye on it also.
