I'm interested in crossing a 1056 Dueck with a 1082 Mackinnon. The 1056 has a reputation for splitting, but I think the 1082 may reduce the risk in later generations. The grandparents of the cross are 935 Lloyd, 825 Shymanski, 963 Stucker, and 845 Bobier. The 963 is 801 Stelts x 935 Lloyd. The 963 was a beautiful pumpkin with great shape, the 1082 is the heaviest 963 offspring, and the 845 used as the pollinator grew a 1252(3rd heaviest 845 Bobier offspring). I think the the 1082 is the perfect match to bring out the best of the 1056. Would you have enough faith in this cross to plant it? Tom

why try this when there are so many good seeds(and crosses) that dont have the reputation as a splitter?

I think that there are a lot of seeds with untapped potential which have been overlooked because of issues such as splitting. If I recall correctly, the 1056 also has a reputation for growing very quickly. It split at 1056lbs in 2000. The record that year was 1140. The 825 Shymanski has a reputation for splitting, but we got the 801 Stelts from it.

tom, go with ur gut instinct..what one seed does for one, isn't necessarily what it will do for another..(me thinks)..iffen that was the case. then why try a cross that is already...mainly..they work different for everyone because each seed is unique in it's own way...hope this helps...joe

I like the idea Tom. I say go for it. The plan gives you a good chance at growing monsters this year and potentially great seeds for the future. Big and orange too. Whats not to like?
