What would have the nicest orange, round, and big offspring? Any suggestions on what seeds I should be seeking?
Also, I have a 500 Pencil '05 -455 Liggett '01 X Self(perfect shape) and a 621 Zuhlke '05 - 1101 Northrup X Self (perfect color). If I crossed them, what are the chances of perfect shape and color from the next generation of seeds?

When you play with genetics the outcome can be a coin toss. No one can predict the exact outcome until the crossed seed has been grown a few times. You would think that two really orange pumpkins that are crossed together would make one pretty pumpkin. That doesn't happen all the time. The only advice I can give you is make your crosses and then grow them the next year and see how they turn out. Genetics are unpredictable.

If I had my pick I would use the 670 Daigle. It has produced alot of round orange ones consistently the last few years. As far as unproven I like the cross on the 790 Bhaskaran (670 Daigle x 781.5 Frantz) available at pumpkinpost.com You could use the 606 Clark (mother of the 1099 Clark) but you don't know how often it will grow a repeat pumpkin like the 1099 because not enough people have grown it.

Lauralie, I have some of my 695 Holder 06 seeds left. That is from a 1225 Jutras x 869.5 Calai. Mine had a nice color already, and was pretty round also. The 869.5 should keep and improve the orange color. If you would like, email me for my addy. jwelty15@lexcominc.net Brad

Anyone grow Paul Rys' seeds? Or see any of his pumpkins? His seeds are offered at the PNW seed auction. 567.5 Mombert and 801.5 Stelts genetics. Maybe an inbred line of orange?

I would like more info on Paul Rys and this project. Seems like he's following in the footsteps of Helmut Laemelle.

The 689.5 Sandercock (869.5 Calai X self) produced the 310 Marining (689.5 X self) for a friend of mine and is chock full of round and orange!!
Alot of 1st time growers have grown the 310 into nice big, round and very very orange fruit. How can you not like the 869.5 Calai selfed twice??
I've got a few seeds left for anyone that wants to give it a try. Look in my 2005 diary for pics.....Glenn

I'll add the 1233.5 Reiss to this list as well. I won the "prettiest" prize at a local weighoff. It had nice color and shape, and went over 25% heavy to the chart(unfortunately no seeds). Mr. Reiss posted a pic of his 1233.5 offspring on the AGGC(600+ lbs.). It is one of the most beautiful pumpkins I've seed pictured. Great, tall, round shape, and shiny orange! Also more than 10% heavy to the chart. The 1233.5 didn't have an awesome first year IMO, but I think there's some potential there for some beauties.

I've seen pictured(not seed.. maybe saw would fit..LOL). Seeing the Reiss pumpkin grown off the 1233.5, has put some added value to the 1233.5 seed for me personally.

Selfed 1233.5 Reiss seeds still avail, and another is going in the ground this year for me. Thinking on which seed to cross it with......? To add to its already great lineage, right now thinking either the 364 Webster, WOW I really like the 1191 Zunino's possibility...then Glenn perhaps putting selfed 869.5 Calai, What do you all think? Then there is this Paul Rys seed? Thoughts....?
