I have focused my 2007 season on the 1016 Daletas (705 Stelts X 846 Calai)... as it has the three things I am looking for (big, orange, proven).
For a cross, would I want a seed with any 705 Stelts or 846 Calai in it? or would I want a seed without any 705 Stelts or 846 Calai in it? or is there a seed out there (that perhaps I could have a realistic chance of getting my hands on) that you would recommend for a cross?
I hate to get too technical, but I'm trying to produce a killer cross so I can grow my own seed in 2008... call it the two year plan...
I was thinking of possibly a Wallace seed (that probably wouldn't have similar genetics, with a focus on BIG)...
any thoughts? thanks!
Pete

Pete,
If you have the room you should try it both ways. I'll have room for 4 plants this year (that would give them 560 sq.ft apiece) and am struggling with the same dilema!! I believe many others are also. There was a good idea recently to grow a plant or two in 5 gallon buckets for the male flowers. Thank you for the seeds by the way...

I like this seed and line as well and have and will continue to fool around with it! The most successful 1016 offspring to date is the 1225 Jutras, which is 1016 X 845 Bobier. In my opinion, crossing in some heavy Bobier genetics is likly the ticket. I did a 1016 X 1097 beachy cross last year(705.5 Vincent 05). Problem is the 1016 can go very light and the 1097 is known as a splitter (thin blossom end?). Perhaps 1068 or 500 Wallace would be good adding in the 898 Knauss. Another choice may be the 1354 Checkon which is heavy 723 bobier) Or maybe 1407 Wolf if you can find one.....723 x 1180 Delatas.......hmmmm Or, you could do a 1016 cross 1230 Daletes (full sibling)and see what happens....could be interesting. The biggest challange here is light to the chart aka thin walls. Just some thoughts, but i believe the 1016 has had and will continue to have a great influence on our sport John

John, My 755 Landry 05 was a 1016 x 1225 cross. I was very disappointed in the weight though. I also did the reverse cross too 726 Landry 05 was the 1225 x 1016. This guy was oval shaped with a blossom end split that had very thick walls. I never got it to the scales though. I gave up on this seed line until reading your posting. Maybe I should consider revising my opinion on those two crosses.

Matches for heavy genetics are plentiful. A couple of good seeds for heavy could be the 1156 Larsen which was very heavy to the chart. Another that may still be around is the 709 McCallum. Both seeds are easy to find and of reasonable cost and or trade value.

Pete, I crossed the 1016 with the 500 Northrup this season looking for size and color. The Northrup is a 1230 Daletas X 670 Daigle. I grew a 764.5 that taped at 800 with nice orange color; just went a little lite. My best seed for orange color is my 664 UOW which is the 1230 X self in 2004. If you're interested in working in lots of Stelts and Calai genetics email me jdsalerno@clearwire.net I have seeds to swap. Jim

If the 1016 is THE seed that best represents THE 3 things you are looking for, self it. If you have 2 seeds, sib it/them. These options are your best chance at retaining THE 3 things you are looking for, from your fruit's seeds. BF

Pete, how bout crossin it with a 1230? I think, and that usually causes problems (me thinking that is)...that they were grown on the same plant!!! 705 Stelts x 846 Calai, is that the cross of the 1016? Peace, Wayne PS...Would that be a self or a sib or some other type of inbreeding??? LOL

We will be growing our 1112.5 (1180 daletas X 1420 La Rue) this next season, it is a planned cross back of sorts that should produce big and orange. Its our "2-year" plan! LOL.
The 1016 Daletas is an awesome seed although we had limited sucess with it the two times we grew it out. Good thinking on planning the cross you want to grow out in future years.

I grew the 1016 this year and crossed it with the 869.5 Calai to try and create a nice cross for me and the Boyz to grow for future years all to no avail. Both split on me during the great growth period in August and the result was very few seeds.
Luckily for me, I have another 1016 and a couple of 670 Daigle seeds that I may (or may not) cross for next year. One of the 670 seeds is going to my buddy Chad to grow and I am sure he will make us all proud with it.
I like the idea of giving the 1016 some more 845 or 723 and have a couple crosses from those that would do the trick....too many nice seeds....too little space!!
