After some insight from Dr Wang, I spent a while researching through the university's electronic resource database.

And what did I find??

An article about the genes of pumpkins and squash! Seems there are over 79 loci for phenotype and 48 polymorphic aloozyme loci.. Everything from color, shape, disease/pest resistance, infertility, etc.. have been studied. I will try and get the author's permission to scan this in and post it on the site.

I'd be very interested in seeing that. Is there a link

You have to go to HortScience journal and pay $10 to have access to this article for 24 hours. On their site just look up 'Genes in Pumpkins and Squash' - the article will pull right up.

I'm working on completly understanding it. So many interactive genes to sort through..

I can say I've already spotted at least one item of interest... Seems that the inhibiter color gene that many GP growers suspect is the culpret for white fruit color. Is a dominant gene studied in C.pepo - not a gene studied in C.maxima. The white pumpkins that are showing up in 'all orange' lines - must be coming from a recessive inhibiter gene. Thus, isn't the same loci (gene)

I'd love to see that too, but first, a dictionary! Those are some words I have never heard before. Help! Thanks, AleX Noel.

Allele = gene
loci = spot where gene's located on chromosome
chromosome = several hundred/thousand genes in a strand
Dominant = trait that HAS to have a parent showing it.
Recessive = trait that doesn't need a parent showing it - but
both parents 'carry' it.
Inhibiter = inhibits a protien/trait from being produced (in
this case color)
line = family.
C.pepo = squash like crook necked, etc.
C.maxima = winter squash and GPs

Thanks, it was mainly those first two. I'll never remember them, but I know right now! AleX.
