I'm a new grower, and have read almost the entire archives of the site. Even after all of this reading, I still don't even have a clue on genetics. I realize the subject could take many lifetimes to understand, but simple genetics. Say a seed is proven, call it a 1000 Starr. It throws consistently in the 800# range. But the seed is getting scarce. Would selfing a 1000 Starr provide the same results? Would this be almost like cloning it, or does it harm it, like sort of an inbreeding thing? Thanks for any guidance, and hope I didn't ask a beat to death question. Thad

In theory it depends on the genetic background of the 1000 Starr,if it was already highly inbred you might expect similar results,if it was a cross between two unrelated lines expect any combination of those genes.Thats how I understand it anyway.

I am no genetic expert but my $.02 anyway.
If the aprents are available then recreating the original cross of the 1000 Starr should yield a closer result.

i do nto think it would 'harm' it in any weigh, shape or form. supposedly the Atlantic Giant does not usually exhibit "inbred depression" ( or something like that) that causes inbreeding or selfing to be a bad thing and causes undesirable traits to surface. or so i have read. now, the 735 Pukos is a selfed 846 Calai, already a fantastic seed with incredible offspring, and the 735 itself has produced numerous giants as well, although i do not know the highest weight from it, possibly 1100-plus pounds....so, selfing is NOT bad, but every cross is a craps shoot and planting the resulting seeds is the only weigh to find out. i think of it this weigh: if i self a fantastic seed (plant), i am crossing the best with the best, yes? yes! hope i helped---eric g
