I have read on the board cases of growers hybridizing AGs with Big Max or Prizewinner pumkins. There are however, some heirloom, open pollinated pumpkins from C. Maxima which have produced pumpkins between 100 and 250lbs. (reportedly). Has anyone tried working with these varieties? Are these the varieties origionally used to create the AG? Also, is there reading material available for researching the development of the AG? Thank you, Ted

Those were the ones used to create the AG. I'm not sure if it's been published, or even if it is known. I will be trying something this year. AleX Noel.

I may try something with the old French heirloom this summer. If you are interested in seeds let me know. Ted

But an AG can only be crossed with another C. Maxima correct?

Look at Johnny's seed farm. They have lots of squash and pumpkins that fall into the C. Maxima family. There are some unique looking fruits like the grey Jarrahdale.

we're talking 1900s here, and whatever seeds Howard Dill used to create the Atlantic Giant FROM are, i would think, gone, but i dunno. Howard Dill did all the work FOR US "modern pumpkin growers" and the possibility of re-creating the wheel depends on if you wanna spend 20 years or more creating a strain that is already in existence. the Burpee Prizewinner, Big Max and whoever makes Big Moon... they are all there ALREADY for our enjoyment! if we keep crossing AGs for weight, and color takes a back seat to it, eventually we will see a 1500, 1750, and i hope someday a 2000-pound pumpkin, color notwithstanding. perhaps a book you can look for is called "The Pumpkin King" by Al Kingsbury? i think? and you may find out a lot from it. i think i will keep mine, once i find it, lol...eric
