How man generations would a seed have to be selfed to be considered pure enough to get a vigor cross??

A lot of growers think 3. Somebody on a thread recently said 7 or 8 for corn varieties.
Imagine someone selfed a 1068, then grew from that and selfed every year for five years. Meanwhile, someone else selfs a 670 and grows from that, selfing each year for 5 years. Then, on year 6, cross the two. Now that would be interesting to see what would happen. Of course, the only way that would happen is with group cooperation and long term commitment to produce a great seed strain...

Ok...its 1999 and you just did the first self cross of the largest fruit ever grown to date. Now its 2005 and the same seed you have selfed five times and crossed with another 5 x selfed seed has just produced a monster 25% heavier than the original.....are you happy?

glenn I was thinking along the same lines only with the good seeds from 1999... not just the biggest.

I don't know where selfing a couple of those 3 or 5 times and then crossing them ... would have lead ...???
a few of those are seeds have some pretty good genetics in them and are found in many of todays hot seeds.

Tremor...please explain for a nu-B. The 962 was selfed how many times...starting with what?...The 291.5 was selfed how many times...starting with what? Then the two were crossed? If this is such a good thing, why has it not been grown...is this a new theory? If this sounds smart-allecky, or naive, it is not meant to be...just a nu-B tryin to figure it all out. At least just a little bit of it. LOL Peace Wayne
PS ???Never been grown...never...not even once??? If this vigor cross theory is truly viable, tell Mr. (or Mrs.) Wolf, that I would be willing to plant one. If the theory is correct, maybe it will eat my house.

the 935 was not a selfed seed, but an interesting inbreed. the 472 waterman was from a 500 Gancarz, with no known pollinator, which was from the 579 nesbitt, again with no known pollinator. could possibly be a VERY long line of selfs, instead of just a long line of selfs.

just shoot me an email if you're interested in the 351's.
