Who out there has seeds that have been selfed for more than three generations?? Wouldnt a cross between two unrelated long term selfed seeds make a supposedly great cross??

There is the 891 Tanner, which is the 846 Calai selfed twice.
Not sure if anyone selfed it this year...

Gerry Gadberry has selfed/sibbed some nice squash for around 4 generations. I have a selfed 772 Golat* which is also a 4th generation selfed/sibbed fruit.

I grew my 891 this year. I did self it.
but it was the smallest fruit in the patch, 503 lbs. pale salmon and white in color ... blobish in shape ... not at all like the 864 or the 735 Pukos. I gave it to a friend to put in his front yard for Halloween. He disposed of it so there are no seeds from it.
... but to be honest I'm not sure anyone would have wanted them.
I know that a few others grew the 891 but I'm not sure if the selfed it or not.

I only self my pumpkins. I have never crossed them. I have had some good ones, but I have never grown the same seed twice. But I do grow only one plant each year and it has worked out great for me. I also selfed my 200 pound squash that I grew in 2002.

I selfed the 707 Toftness 3 times. None were given ideal care so didn't exceed 400 lbs. It throws a light colored round fruit on a vigorous vine if anyone is interested. What I like about it is the uniform thickness in the blossom end.

my 861 fredricks/george seeds are the only 845 bobier 801 stelts cross I know of that has ben selfed out one generation on each side. I'm hoping the hybrid vigor comes out. There hasn't been many 845 801 crosses done ever that I know if. I have heard of one or two, but not many. Jimmy

Are three generations enough to get a good vigor cross??
I bet there are more selfed for more than 3 generations out there, some non intentional.

How about this sleeper cross. The 568 Andrews 99 (738 Stellpflug 97 x 1092 Burke 98)has only been grown once. Joe Ailts selfed it in 01. 798.5 Ailts 01.

Check this seed out:

351 .8 Wolf '02 (962 Willemse '00 x 291.5 Wolf)

962 Willimse is the 674.5 Waterman '90 self 5 times.

291.5 Wolf = 792 Armstrong = 1092 Burke = 935 Lloyd all were selfed.

So you plant the 351.8 Wolf. So you're a decent grower in a decent climate and experience decent luck. You pop an 800 pounder. Hybrid vigor? Or not?
Ok. What if the plant had extremely large tendrils? What if the fruit had excessive cantalouping? What if the stem was a foot and a half long? etc. Hybrid vigor? Or not?
Will we know it when we see it?
What phenotype do you believe shows Hybrid vigor? BF

darn, looks like i should have jumped in this one eariler.

I think that experienced growers may be able to notice the little differences that might be associated with "vigor". For me, one of the main characteristics would be the ability to put out a lot of females. however, i don't know if that's truly a sign.

nobody has grown a 351 that i know of. i'll be putting one in next year, but i can't dedicate a good spot to it (yet).

On the topic of 898 lines, the 463 Rhinehart is from a 820 Werner, crossed with the 870 Powers. the 820 was a selfed 1007, and the 870 was a selfed 1048. It was grown twice this year, and although it was not given a good shot, it looks promising. (i pollinated mine with a 658 wolf, which is a selfed 846 calai, making it oddly similar to the 1180 daletas, in a roundabout way if you look at the tree)

I have a decent number of 463 seeds if anyone is interested in planting them.

Now see...even the home grower wont dedicate a good spot to it. How can you compare that seed to any other seed in a good spot? Very often its a miracle to get even ONE good shot at a seed being grown...less than 1000lbs in a "not good spot" and its toast....forever to be told its another remake that didn't work.

I think hybrid vigor gave me tendrils with leaves on them. Or maybe it was the mushrooms I was snacking on that I found growing in the patch.....

Hybrid vigor (if it really ever does get a chance in AGs) doesn't have to result bigger fruit as G suggests. But it can.
