Jordan tell me again how much space you have to grow TWO pumpkins in? Plus if you get a 1469 Checkon. With the limited area you are going to try grow in why not cross it by itself for a selfed cross.

If you are planning on growing all ten, you will need at least 6500 square feet I would imagine.

You have 2000sqf of patch for 5 plants? Spacing is a very important consideration. Each plant requires atleast 20'x 20' of growing space. Go ahead plant as many plants as you wish in the small area you have. Don't say we did not try to help you. I am no world record grower, never claimed to be one. This I do know, I am always willing to help new growers in this hobby. As long as have the area needed and are willing to put in the work necessary. Good Luck on lifes adventures..Shannon

Jordan, seriously spacing does matter. Nu-b here who tried to grow 5 in room for 4 and then got real dumb and added another. These thing will eat your house. Seriously, if overcrowded you will do more damage getting in and out of the patch to pollinate and apply pesticides and fungicides that will be needed than a gaggle of kindergardners running loose in a candy factory. One of the early responses to your posts was to stop, take a breath, and relax. Spend the fall and winter prepping your patch and learning. Good seed opportunities will come along. We all enjoy your enthusiasm, but you seriously have some things to learn. Wish you the best. Grow 'em big. Peace Wayne

learning by doing... why not just let him do his thing? Let him plant the desired seeds, all in a row, spacing them about one foot. Making mistakes is sometimes the best way to learn. Of course, it would be wise to listen to advice that can help to avoid a wasted year but this person doesn't want to listen.

I seriously doubt much is going to change his mind. Sometimes folks get the bug and think they'll be the one that "revolutionizes" things and show everyone wrong. In that case, like Martin said, you just have to let them do their thing and fail, just to learn.

I learned it the hard way what to do with 1100 spft of patch area and what not. Never again more than 2 plants. Knowing this or being told earlier, it´s just a waste of your seeds and season time not do it from the expierence of others.

overcrowding advice from a newbie you may think okay i will grow all the plants and handle it well its gonna be so great!!! right? well for us me and sis we planted alot of plants and the space was too small we had them growing on grass and worst yet when i went into the patch to cull some male flowers ooops down goes tracy. Also pests where in abudnece and since i could not get into the patch do to overcrowding they mutiplied fast causing much problems another prob i have personally gone thru is lack of pruinning and keeping track of things we had vines crisscrossing each other and could not tell which pumpkin was on which vine it was nuts lots of fun yes but nuts. I admire you for what you are trying to do but for me i have learned a great lesson growing 2-3plants on a half acre is going to be my plan this upcomming season and that way i guarentee all those seeds i asked for get grown with the respect they deserve and the attention and care all giants need to grow big. good luck next season may all your dreams come true. tracy michaels first yr grower

Last year was my 2nd year and I did alot of genetic crosses. I grew 8 plants in 1000 sq ft of tilled soil. I let the vines grow out into the grass. I made 16 genetic pumpkins ranging from 592lbs to 67lbs. Believe me it was lot of work. This year I grew 4 plants and found it to be more reasonable. I grew 2 of my own crosses to 670lbs. and 646lbs On the other 2 plants I grew 3 more genetic crosses and 4 open pollinated pumpkins. If I wanted a shot at 1000lbs. I would only grow 1 plant in that space.

My first year I did the Afghan method. . .everything all wove through each other with huge holes.
I think there should be a beanstalk method contest. . .greatest altitude above stump for a pumpkin >50lb.

Jordan, since I don´t understand the math in your last posting, I would say your growing area is something between 900 - 1500 sqft which is the place I have and I need to say it once more here: Not more than 2 plants in an area about that size or you won´t get lucky in 2006.

What a post...but a lesson that needs to be learned to avoid disaster. I tried 6 plants this past year in approx. 2200 sq. ft. and was totally over run. I had been told in advance and new better....oh well...live and learn. Here's hoping Jordan will slow down and take some advice from all you pro's. Peace Wayne

If just anyone was given 2 great seeds and grew both it doesnt mean a new world record as most would hope for!! it takes allot of TIME, PREP, and WORK to grow a bigem I dont care how experienced you are. Take Al Eaton for an example in 2004 he grew an world record at 1446 and he knows his stuff!!!! this year he was under 1000lb mark. Hey it Happens.... I believe the biggest thing here is LUCK... against splits and other disasters.... keep her growing till the end and seeing what she weights :-)
Dave
Myself haveing my own home grown fruit break a world record... Well it would probably cause me to have a stroke at the weightoff when the numbers poped up on the scale. I'm growing them for fun basically trying and learning and haveing fun to beat my prior persional best record and learning at the same time!!
Everyone hopes and wishes for the next world record fruit but it takes more then just haveing a good seed or 2.
