I have a quick question for you. I saw that you made a post that you came across some old seeds that you were able to germinate, which i think is awesome.....in any event, you didnt seem all that knowledgible at first, which is fine, no problem there, we're all here to help, but, i was just curious, how you managed to come across not one, but five 846 calai seeds?

I also got a few 1016*846 calai on the way, hope it does what i hope it will do. And some 978.6 berard '03 which from what I have seen is one of the orangest giants. But this fall I hope to get some others, as i have lots of room to plant.

007, The 846 was grown in 1999, it has been grown by many growers. I wouldn't think there is all that many of them left. If someone had 5 of them it would be considered a gold mine. It is a very expensive seed at auctions. Like they said above the seeds you have are probably a cross made with the 846. IT could still be a great seed to grow. I have grown the 735 pukos before, it is a 846 Calai self pollinated and it has done very well. There are a lot of 846 crosses. You have do be careful when you put a seed up for trade and make sure it is what you say it is. Many growers will get really upset if someone misrepresents a seed. We know you are new and will learn all of this. Good luck, Doug Adams Jn 3:16

Sorry for the confusion, you are right they are 846 Calai*898 Knauss. I thought that meant they were 846 calai because the 846 was the female. But now I know, thanks everyone for being patient with a newbie.

Well now that I have cleared that up. Does anyone have anything to say about the 846 Calai* 898 Knauss cross? Like said they are from Don Langevine. Also if you have not seen the 978.6 Berard '03 you should check it out.

846 x 898 should be an excellent cross to grow.

The 846's tend to be very orange and nice shaped. It has grow 20 over 1000 lbs, but tend to go a little under the estimated weight. It is considered the 4th best producing seed of all time. An 846 sold at auction last winter for $575 US. The 898's tend to be a little ugly and lighter coloured. They also temd to go heavy and has produced 7 over 1000 lbs. It is considered the 7th best producing seed of all time. I don't remember a 898 selling by it self last winter but one sold along with a 1097 Beachy for $450. Both seeds are popular and hard to get. Don's 846 X 898 should be a great genetic cross but is yet unproven. There are 4 846 X 898 pumpkins listed in the AGGC. The 977 Hester 03, the 976 Daletas 03, 795 Larue 03 and 794 Ceja 04. None have produced 1000 lbs!

keep in mind that 846 x 898 is also the reverse cross of the 1180 Daletas, which did well last year, and is looking to put up some nice numbers again this year.

and if those weren't ENOUGH things to remember, be careful with the asterisk (*); an asterisk indicates a SQUASH, so use a capital 'X' to indicate a cross between female and male.
895.5 Hester* X SELF
the asterisk can go right after the number as well. it is ENTIRELY possible, also, for a cross to have a pumpkin X a squash and the reverse as well.
895.5* X 582 582 X 895.5* etc.,... just a jolly FYI, eric/'pal2
