Was at the local Garden Center on Friday and noticed on there seed shelf they had some seeds listed as
atlantic Giant Dill Seeds..
had a picture on the front of an 600 + pound pumpking
I didnt purchase any But this 2005 growing season I have 2 growing locations
My home patch wich will home 4 plants ( already choosen)
My Fathers patch will home 4 plants ( already choosen )
My field "farm" patch will home 10-15 plants, Ive got 8 seeds here which I plan on growing out there already
but was thinking of tossing a few of dill seeds in there and crossing them into some of the great seeds ive already got.
just wondering about these seeds .. are they actually dill seeds or other seeds
thanks
Dave
just being curious here.. but could one of these seeds under good growing conditions pop out an 1000 lb + fruit ?

3 years ago I bought such a packet in our gardencenter. I grew pumpkins around 50 lbs. 2 years ago I got seeds from fellow growers here and grew 321 lbs under the same condition. I guess the seed corporations only buy the name from Howard but not the seeds.

i would NOT cross them into the other GREAT seeds you already have that are of known (perhaps) genetic origin. it could be the difference between real drinks at the bar and "well" drinks--who KNOW what the parents are??? and, we DO strive to keep the crosses as controlled as possible! if you are gonna go ahead and grow them, i'd say just pollinate them AMONGST THEMSELVES and see how they do, but i think that unless they DO hammer-out some impressive fruit, they should be just "tried-out" for now. although, there are some Big Max X 940 Mombert crosses out there, or similar! and, hmmmm...my own Prizewinner X 1230 Daletas cross, lol! okay, eric, shut up now.......EG

I used store bought seed last year, and with an amazing amount of work, grew a 132lb whopper. I second that I can't see store bought ever going over 300-400lbs.

265lbs. is my best from a generic Dill seed. There is plenty of free seed here that can do a lot better than that.

My 636 Dill 03 produced 50 lbs freaks... in the best soil. Backups in less soil from homemade crosses were 500+ and 300+. Maybe it was only bad luck to get un unproved seed?

Jernej, we talk about store bought seed, this you can find in paperbags among other veggi seeds, not about numbered Dill seeds.

Thanks for info boehnke. Last year in Slovenia they started to sell AGs with no label whatsoever. I was not even considering to try them.

Dave, if you need a few more good seeds to fill in your patch, email me and I'll fix you up with a couple seeds from this years crop (926 hunt - 1097.5 Beachy x 842 Eaton, & my 839 Hunt - 842 x 1097.5).
