Is this common to see? I've found 5 relatively new leaves that have snapped their stalks about half way up cleanly across over the past 3 days. They are left hanging on by barely anything.
All of these affected leaves appear to be deep green ones that grew right after the 2,4-d that I believe affected just one stray vine on the other side of the plant. They all appeared to have been stunted, and looked bloated like an over intake of nitrogen. (This could have also been the cause, I may have over corrected for a spot of 2 days of hard rain)
Most of them are growing to normal size now, but did they put on too much bulk initially to hold themselves up?

Hmmm. Perhaps an animal is visiting your patch?

I bet the lawn care company also applied a fertilizer application. Lawn fertilizer is pretty much pure nitrogen.

I plan to update my diary this weekend with some better pictures, but for now I've uploaded them here.

I found 2 other leaf stems on new growth that have these "notches" or holes about half way up the leaf stem. This appears to be where they are splitting clean.
It almost looks like the sign of bugs, but I'm not sure which it would be? I also found a similar hole on a vine I was planning to end and bury. I cut that part out, and saw not sign of bugs on the inside. I was worried about squash vine borer.
Will svb's enter or eat the leaf stem?
I had a few in the patch about a month ago but had already started by insect treatment with 2 doses of systemic and have been spraying contact insecticide. Plan for another round this weekend of both.
I have seen now sign of frass, which leads me to believe either the high nitrogen or 2,4-d is causing them to split?
There are not really any animals here that would cause this damage. I am out in a suburban neighborhood with fence on 3 sides. The largest animal that would be in the yard is a rabbit, but i've barely seen them this year. The patch is also mostly blocked off with construction wind fencing.

For anyone that was curious, I've loaded a better close up of the holes I'm finding in my leaf stalks. I cut this off of a side vine cleaning up my patch. The leave itself was a mix of the bloated high nitrogen / 2,4 d damage? leaf and regular looking growth. I haven't found too many new leafs with the same sort of stalk damage, but there are still others from that time period that are still standing.
