Is there a preference or difference in a pumpkin resulting from a 5 lobe flower as compared to a 4 lobe flower. Is number of lobes just random or genetic?

As far as I see, completely random, though I prefer 5 lobes. I also feel how they are positioned once your pumpkin lands affects the end shape, and will be further testing my theory this year as they get through their first week.

Lobe # is genetic.Growers picked 5 lobers for many years so theyre pretty common.I dont believe 3,4,5or 6 lobes will effect the final weight. I believe lobe # will effect the shape some. The more lobes the taller the fruit will tend to be. I seen some real long pickle shaped fruit grown on three lobers. Some great growers like 4 lobe fruit-they feel 4 lobes fruit shapes have a better chance of making it to the scale.

This is interesting to me, a higher lobe count was once considered important for growing a giant. Not so much anymore. Who knows what other things that are generally accepted as true, will eventually change.

Hmmm if there is truth to any of that it sounds like I should look for four lobes to grow the best shaped pumpkins.
