I was wondering if anyone has had any luck growing any amount of fiddlehead fern plants. At 5 dollars a pound roadside here, it would be nice not to have to drag oneself thru the woods every spring for a meal or two....

Are you sure you have the right one? One way to identify them is that the stalk is "u" shaped like celery and they are very green. If you've seen the pictures , they must be exactly like that. Others are very bad. Anyways, you eat the stem and the head. And don't pick all of them or you will kill the plant.Boil for 15 minutes, drain and add butter. yum.

Oh and they are always near a stream, especially islands that flood in the spring.Never found just in the woods in my experience.

I picked 3lbs on sunday. Gave 1lb to friends. Cooked 1lb for wife and I. I don,t take all the curled heads. I leave at least one on each plant . I take them at 4 inches or less. I wash them at least three times to get the brown dead leaves off. They are just about done here at my sister in laws, 50 miles NW of Ottawa.

At least it doesn't take long to pick a pound as they are fairly heavy.
