I've read recently that merit will not kill worms, does it kill the microbes in the soil? If so is there a pesticide that does not?

One of the biggest problems over the years with respect to bacteria & insecticides has been just the opposite. High microbe soils tend to "consume & destroy" insecticides before their anticipated life expectancy. LOL
No. Merit doesn't harm bacteria.
Fungicides are more likely to cause trouble.
