Well this time they didn't eat the piece they bit off, so maybe the pepper did work. Kinda spat it back out I guess...

Squirrels are sort of a wild card problem for me. We have lots here... and normally they are not a problem. BUt once in a blue moon they can decide to curse your harvest. I think the fact that the hot sauce worked might cross birds off your list of culprits. In my experience many or most birds have a poor ability to taste and smell. Hot pepper and other types of smell/taste deterrents haven't worked very well for me with birds.

Keep fighting Brandon! We learn more through the adversity than we do from our success.

If it's worth doing then it's worth the struggle. Its painful, but I'm ok with being forced to improve.

Set up a mouse trap, you'll know if it is deer mice or voles quickly.

Indeed. I'm getting very curious. I'm thinking trail cam or maybe just sit in a chair (I can hide where it will not see me) out there from 4 am to 8 am. More damage last night.
Very consistent critter. Again today found a couple uneaten pieces but I think another leaf or two were eaten, with no remains.

If you can, I'd recommend stringing out some netting around your plants. It should be flexible so that they can't climb it. It's done wonders for protecting my plants.

Might be a great idea... After basically losing everything I finally put plastic over them, but plastic will catch the wind. Bird netting won't catch the wind. So I'll look for some! Good idea, thanks.
