Sorry for the confusion. The biggest plant was started in this large McD's cup, and the two smaller ones were started in 2 different sizes of smaller cups. I transplanted them after their roots started circling. The very smallest plant (in the pot with the pumpkin) was started in an egg carton. Yes, my conclusion is that the bigger cup and undisturbed roots seem to benefit the plant. I honestly assumed this was one of those things everyone else already knew and I was late to the game haha.

Yeah, try avoid letting plants get rootbound since they out grow their containers fast. Timing and prep is everything (talking pkns) in Spring.

Thanks . I love the clear drink cup idea. It seems like looking at the roots might be helpful.

I have never done this experiment, GREAT INFO!! I have always started mine in tiny cups and then up planted. Last time I do that. How old are the plants in this photo?

They have been out of the dirt for exactly 17 days in this photo; 20 days from when I put them in the cups.
