Nick I willl attempt to answer your question,The middle (Rootpower squash) acts as an intermediary to bridge the gap between the rootstock and the watermelon. It helps to make the rootstock and watermelon compatible over the long growing season. An atlantic giant has such vigorous roots and the "stump" gets such a big diameter, a melon can't keep up, And after a month or two there are always graft failures i.e. plant collapse because of that incompatiblity. The intermediate stock in this case the Hybrid rootpower squash has a growth rate that is somewhere in the middle between the AG and the Watermelon. This is a pretty clever idea and I wonder if any growers in the US or Canada have tried it yet?
