Try planting the seed flat instead of point down. You should see less seed coat issues.

I normally just use the edge of a knife to pry open the seed case and release it from the plant
|

Exactly what VT John said. Lay them down flat, just like it would be in nature. Plant about 1 inch deep. The seed coat will stay in the soil.
