384.5 had that type of seeds. Seeds looked just like it’s mother’s seeds which is 108 Niewenhoff.

Does anyone know the genetics of the 108. I know at one point John had crossed the pecan type with the westfall type. Not sure if the 108 is a descendant of one of his crosses.

Unless im mistaking the 108 came from a 140 Niewenhoff that was pollinated by the 279.5 English. The 140 was 3 or 4 generations of selfing the large variety of BG seeds.

J lindley do you have a picture of the seeds? Harry Hurley posted this picture in his diary a while back. I am amazed by the variation.

I have had two different looking types of seeds come from the 177 Westfall seed. The more common type is the seed on the left.

got me thinking I should cross the two distinct BG lines and see what happens. I didn't get a PB this year for Bushel Gourd (the weather in June was horrible) but I did manage to get the cross I was looking for. I crossed my 135.5 Nieuwenhoff (large pecan type seed) with a 279.5 English (small long gourd type seed) and grew a light green colored 140 pound gourd. I have about 500 seeds from it drying right now and they all look great and mature. If anyone wants to try this seed next year, especially if you believe in hybrid vigor, then send me a SASB with Canadian postage or just include a couple dollars to cover postage if mailing from US.
John Nieuwenhoff, 37 Stewarttown Road, Georgetown, Ontario, CANADA L7G 4S5 BTW the seeds are large but not as corky or ruffled as the 135.5 was so it looks like somewhere in between the two types.

John,

I believe the next breakthrough in weight gains will be achieved by crosses similar to yours. I'm definitely interested in your seeds. Doug
