Whats the growth patterns of the root systems of cantalouopes. Are they similar to the melon in shallow and wide spread. I would think they don't grow lateral as far as melons roots but was wondering what would be a size to run irragation lines. Thanks

i would say the root system will be about 150 to a max of 200 sq.ft. i am limiting mine to 100 sq.ft this year.

Good question, I wonder if the roots are like pumpkins or melons. The plants look more like pumpkins.

They're similar to melons but with very very little rooting at leaves. I've only seen these roots on a couple of occasions.

This may be a silly question, but can you grow them on a trellis like a long gourd and still get a respectable fruit?

I can't imagine the vine being able to hold it till it's ripe.

http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=146029 These are regular cantaloupes I grew last year.I tie them to the trellis with pantyhose.Tie them when they are small and let them fill the panthose up.

Nice pic there thanks. The idea was to have the fruit growing on top of the trellis so vine stress would be minimal. Picture a smaller long gourd trellis.

Roots are wide and shallow like watermelons, what little roots do come out at the nodes are ussually weak compared to melons or kins. Plant size unpruned maybe average 200-225sqft, so Kirk is probably correct.
