I had the idea last night along with a couple others in a BP chatroom for a Tomato challenge. The idea is similar to the 150 Challenge for pumpkins, this is the 5 gallon challenge for Tomatoes. Basically, you have a 5 gallon bucket and need to grow the largest tomato you can while only using the 5 gallon bucket as your soil. I need to gauge interest to see if it’s worthwhile expanding this and making it a public event. If you are interested in participating, please let me know in the replies.

It was called the "5 gallon bucket challenge" . Scroll back through the previous pages on the tomato board and you will see.

There is also or was a "team challenge" . Watch for that(Bacon Butt was running it).
There was also a 5 gallon sunflower challenge. Maybe you can try to resurrect one of the 5 gallon challenges.

I found it. It surprised me that there have been some 4+lbers grown in 5 gallons. It looks like it hasn’t been done in a year though (at least on this forum). If the original creator doesn’t come back and host it this year, I might still try this if others are interested. We’ll see.

Count me in too. I was disappointed there was no competition in 2022, but with all the BER problems I had last year, it was probably a blessing !

I wonder what A.I. thinks of a tomato growing in a 5-gallon bucket.

reedl, if Tomatotim does not chime in..you would have to decide what the rules should be. Was the original contest in 2019?

Good luck if you do this..ask "bacon butt" how difficult growers can be....

good to see you too tim. Things are great with me, other than staying up way late too trying to figure out how make a webpage the hard way. < > <---I am going get good at typing the left and right arrow. What a fool am I...I have available 30 different easy ways of doing it and i pick none of them. Maybe that is why I havent grown for 5 years.

I hope you have been good. Reedl last night was saying that he was having connectivity problems. I would expect him to solve that soon and jump into the conversation.

I have no idea about that piggy piece...he is probably out there some. I miss Zeke also....

Does it have to be soil or is perlite or clay pebbles allowed? Or full hydroponic.
