I just received conformation of another sponsor for Gale Woods weigh off in Minnetrista, Mn on October 6th,2018. Tomato prize fund now is $1000 first place, $350 2nd, $150 3rd, and $100 each for 4,5 and 6th. The previous premier tomato weighoff disappeared a few years ago (Great Tomato Hunt) in Canada. First place at Gale Woods for sure covers air fare from anywhere in the USA. I am still working on securing sponsors...the prize fund may go higher. Grow em big...if you win Gale
Woods you are at the top of your game.

The Great Tomato Hunt hasn't disappeared BTW. It was resurrected by Terra Nursery in Ontario a couple years ago with first prize of $5000 gift card, 2nd $2500 product (2 years ago I won a wood fired pizza oven, last year an outdoor patio set worth $2500), and I think a $300 prize for each store. Not many people participating in it, especially the Tomato heavy hitters, not sure why. You may have to be a resident of Canada though.

I apologize for the wrong info on The Great Tomato Hunt. I was not aware that it had been resurrected. It would be interesting to know the details and if it is restricted to canadian growers. Hoping to meet my friends In October.

Wow! That is a great incentive and very tempting. It would be a hell of a carry on, being so delicate and all.

I'll post about the Great Tomato Race in a separate post when the details are released. Last year I think they posted the info in May.

I checked the rules for 2017 for the Great Tomato Race...Have to be a resident of Ontario. This is more restrictive than just Canada. Gale Woods...you just have to grow big. Canadians welcome to compete, and those across the pond in Europe feel free to come take the prize. The prize fund is not big enough to cover international air fare yet..but we are still young. Hoping to keep growing bigger year by year.

You know Doug, all you have to do is ask for seeds, There are at least 5 Minnesota growers that would gladly supply you. I am not going to give any details...but 2019 is going to be even harder to place in the money.

james..kind of off topic but of the 70 plants i grew last year..of all different genetics, all from a tomato 5 pounds or over..i had probably about 10-15% that the blossom after pollinated was not fused. You have time..if you find one that is not fused, wait for higher truss mega.

Bob,

I'm not sure yet, but I might just stick with pumpkins this year. It could be a busy summer for me. You're being mysterious about 2019. Maybe it has something to do with you watching your dirt grow?
