Give them a try !you can grow them just like tomato plants on a trellis or string or a pole or whatever.
I just weighed close to a 14 pounder and it was fun watching that thing grow!
I hope to at least double that next year :-)

Oh ya, they are blast. I grew them for the first time and did nothing to them, just let them grow on the ground and allowed as many as would form (about 5 on each plant) in the hopes of getting lots of seeds. Unfortunately a lot of the seeds are empty but I managed 9 or 10 cucumbers all around the 10 pound mark. I'm hoping to have enough seeds for a few for each member in the GVGO membership packs. Will give them a serious try next year, but holy cow, how do you keep ahead of the downey mildew? I sprayed them with everything I have all season and they went from one spot on each leaf to "where the heck is the plant?" in a matter of days.

Awesome pork chop!
That's cool pumpkin Shepherd!
I just started getting a little powdery mildew just like the pumpkins and sprayed them once with Eagle 20 and that's it

John, I have quite a few cucumbers going especially for the GVGO seed packs, so together we should have enough for all the members. I hope to weigh a 17.5lb+ cucumber tomorrow.

I grew some giant cucumbers using seeds I got from Patrick White. I will be giving away some seed packs at the PGPGA Weigh-off. I only grew 2 plants this year and they were amazing to watch. Powdery mildew is a problem toward the end but no big deal. I think the GPC should add them to the list of things they keep track of. Maybe offer a prize for this category as well. They reach 20 pounds in Alaska where Patrick White now holds the record for last year. I think the World Record is around 25 pounds, also Alaska I believe.

Sweet Brad! Let us know how much it weighs
I agree with with you Marv.... I hope in the future they will be at GPC recognized. The world record is just over 28 pounds and it was grown by David Thomas in the UK

So how did yours do Marv?

Will weigh mine this Saturday at the PGPGA Weigh-off. The first one and second one were both around 8 pounds. This one looks bigger but probably will not weigh more than yours did. This is the second one from one plant.

Mine weighed 17.6 lbs. The long one was 32.1".

I had three this year: 16 lbs., 17 lbs. 9 oz., and finally 14 lbs. 6 oz. I firmly believe the 17 lb. one could have went heavier, but it broke off on a really windy night.

If you guys want seeds email me and I will send you some. Include your addresses as I have enough for maybe 5 or so people. I will be giving them out at the PGPA Weigh-off and have no idea how many I will need to satisfy all there. First come, first served. Porkchop and Master P are at the head of the line

Master P I got them from Patrick W. The 17 lb. one was 34" long, and the 16 lb. one was 30 1/2" long. I only took the length measurement. Too much of a variance doing any other ones.
I asked Patrick how long his was, and he said it was 36". I am using that as my bench mark for future growing seasons.

The 17.6lb cucumber was 31.5" long and the girth at the top was 17.7". The bottom was less. Didn't tape that.

Gritch, the long ones aren't always the heaviest. In fact my long ones were all lighter than my shorter ones. Originally we grew two different types, one for weight and one for length. Over the years the two were (accidently) cross pollinated and now you can get anything. Once in a while you get a long and fat one. Unfortunately short and skinny is also an option.

Chris, I have both long and heavy cucumber seeds to trade. The seeds I have go back to Alfred Cobb (WR holder) through David Thomas (new WR holder) to me.
