I never imagined I would be sitting in 9th place in the World with a 128" Long Gourd at this time of year (actually 8th if the 556" one listed in first is a error LOL). Did a lot of people not grow them or have bad luck or other problems? Maybe there are more out there waiting to be measured. Just wondering.

I know a lot of growers had problems with shriveled up, rotting ends on their gourds. We had it on some of ours, and so did another grower in Anamosa. Numbers of gourds were down at Anamosa, but the top 3 beat the 3 year old site record by 2.25", 8.75" and 9.25".

If you look at the last three or four seasons 128 inches would have gotten you a even higher place. this was a good year just no world record. There still hasnt been that many over 130inches.

Tried for seasons to figure it out. I didn't put all that much effort into LG's my first year in 2012 and grew one 106 3/4". Built a trellis for 2013 and didn't crack 100". Shriveled up end on my two best this year 82" & 81". So I decided to take on the monster of all garden projects. I'll be swinging the trellis from a "north/south" orientation to "East/West". My soil seemed to dry out fairly quickly. Anyone have thoughts on soil for these things? Myself and another grower need to take down a state record in Oregon for 2015

My trellis is in the edge of my pumpkin patch. So they get about the same care as my AG's do. If your soil is dry you may need to water every day and mulch around the plants. my trellis runs east/west and plants grow up the south side. I have been lucky broke Indiana state record all three years I have grown them. This year LG is 126.50. Good luck

Northwest. I fertilized my soil the same as I did for pumpkins. I did add a few trout heads and guts under each plant, and that seemed to help. Gives me a good excuse to go fishing too. I'm a big believer in foliar feeding long gourds. They don't get the extra roots along the vine when growing on a trellis. So nutrient uptake through leaves helps. I use water soluble tomato food with higher K mixed with some molasses every other day once the gourds hit about 3' long. I also give them weekly root drenches at the same time. My soil is silt over sand. It was a soaked mess at the end of June because of the flood but I had to start watering by August.
