Hi, looking for recommendations for the best tasting variety, maybe around 8-12 lbs each. I only have about 230 sq ft patch--would that just be one plant, or two? Thanks, Kurt

'Harvest moon' is probably my favorite. It's a seedless one. For seeded I really like Allsweet. Sangria hybrid is also considered a really good one. Too many to chose from.

Harvest moon average 10-15 pounds. It is a seedless variety so it would need to be planted next to a seeded variety for pollination. I would plant three or four harvest moon's and one seeded variety for pollination purposes. Note Make sure the variety you choose to pollinate with looks substantially different than the seedless variety or you could get them confused at harvest time, (So I would consider avoiding moon and stars and also sugar baby as pollinators)

Thanks, last question---looks like I can pretty much grow the same as my giant pumpkin, except don't need to bury tap roots, right?

Right. Many growers will lay down a weed fabric or plastic mulch for the vines to grow out onto. That makes the melons even easier to grow because there will be no weeds.
