The internet article "Why giant watermelon growers get hooked on their hobby" is a good read and covers three well known growers. You might wonder about the photo at the top of the article though. The unfamiliar watermelons are Jumbo Triumphs. The man in the photo is Arnold Middlebrooks and the child is one of his daughters. The photo was made at the McWilliams furnishing store on the south end of Cotton Row in Hope, Arkansas in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Mr. Middlebrooks was in the process of crating individual big watermelons for Mr. McWilliams to ship by rail to customers. The crates were constructed from boards cut to the dimensions of each watermelon.
