Anybody have an answer or theory on the lower weights of melons this year?
My season here started off hot and dry then in july and august it turned wet and cool.
Didn't seem like i could get a melon to put on any weight.
So here we go!
197 was my biggest and it took around 100 days to get there!

Seemed like we went from frost to 90 degrees overnight. Then went from 90 degrees to frost overnight. Weird weather year for sure.

Home of happy lil plants

frank and I took up tomato growing so that has become a time consuming hobby, nc got hurricaned, most tn got non stop rain, Ohio bill petit grew a watermelon over 250lbs so ruling witchcraft in ohio, Charles and Daniel in north Alabama did pretty decent above normal this year.
summary-
Effort, luck, and weather

Excluding last year, the weights of the 2018 top twenty winning melons were similar to past years and larger than in many years. The top twenty included many growers who grew melons larger than they grew in the past and the genetics was much more varied than in the past. It was a hard year to grow watermelons but it was refreshing to see lots of new names in the top twenty as well as lots of new good seed choices.

Similar to the pumpkins Im guessing the warmer nights & high humidity led to a lot of disease. How many of you had cloudy spells lasting 3 days or more?

Yes Mark, I had several spells where we didn;t see the sun for 5 to 7 days. And never got over 95 July to first of sept.

I had pollination issues and that caused too large of a root system before pollination which lead to stump issues. But hey, at least I didn't have to weigh someone else's melon to try to win.
