Just a heads up to new growers. Keep on the look out for spider mite damage. In dry or hot years they will be bad. They usually start in the crown of the plant as the leaves will appear rusty and older looking. Left unchecked they will eventually take the whole plant down.

Is Bifen ok to use for them?

No, you need to usa a product with Abamectin in it. Bifen will make it worse.

Try eBay.
I bought some Avid from there for a reasonable price.
To my knowledge, legality keeps it from being sold in smaller sizes.
The guy on ebay had like a half pint.
Sold “ 2 medicine droppers for 50 bucks, and we’ll throw in a half pint of Avid for free”.

I add 6-8 drops of dish soap/gal water or tea brew to my foliar spraying (the last thing I put in the sprayer so there is no foaming). The soap suffocates pests. They come in contact with it and it suffocates the mites & aphids and makes a great contact for the tea. You can also spray the 6-8 drops/gal of dish soap mix alone under the leaves too for better control of mites. It really works too. I've never had trouble with mites on indoor plants or out. I do this as preventive maintenance early on in the plants life

It would be nice to have a co-op for watermelon growers. Understandably issues may come up but I bought enough Ranman last year to spray all the giant watermelon in the country...for years.
